STO from a newbie perspective

endafreshendafresh Member Posts: 0 Arc User
I'll keep it TLDR (too long, didn't read) for ya'll.

Initial Tutorial/Beginning Ground Combat
-WOW IT IS STAR TREK WOOOOO THEY GOT THE SOUNDS YAY YAY WOOO
-Killing borg so easy? Well it is the tutorial, meh. Hope they get hard later.
-I have to switch to shooter mode? LAME!!! But w/e.
-These controls are a bit clunky but w/e. Too much delay before it 'registers' a change to shooter or aim mode.

Initial Space Combat
-OMG my ship moves SO SLOW wtf....
-Oh so that's how you move the ship, but its still too damn slow. Takes forever to get 'out of combat' >_>
-Wow the explosions hurt me? >_<

Landing on Earth Space Dock for the first time
-Wow they think I'm so stupid I have to follow a blue line, and they put in a cinematic for it? :P
-Oh cool they've got a walkable station yay!
-WTF? I've got tons of icons on the map but zero clue what any of them mean...where the hell is the 'map legend' so I can tell what is what?
-Look at all these shops! I wanna buy stuff but NO clue where to start!

First SB24 fleet action
-Wow there's 20 ships here, time to blow some stuff up!
-OMG I died...oh well.
-OMG I died AGAIN, wtf...
-OMG I died again!? Really? WTF am I doing wrong? Am I undergeared? Do I not belong here? I thought I was 'leveled up to 50' so why do I suck so bad?
-TRIBBLE this TRIBBLE, time for the 5-person runs
-OMG I'm still dying way too easy....TRIBBLE this game.

And that's pretty much how a typical 'new to MMO' player may think and what they may go through.

Thoughts:

-Beginning Fleet Actions at SB24 are way too overpowering for undergeared newbies due to a lack of communication in the window that doesn't mention THESE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE LEVEL 50 ONLY EVENTS. Like...wow. I feel bad for all those who have to deal with total newbies in these events.

-There's little to no tutorial guidance for working in a group or MANY other useful/crucial game features. Stuff like how to trade BoFFs, advanced ground/space combat tactics, etc. We need more tutorials on a variety of topics and have them in-game rather than having to alt-tab and spend hours reading 3rd-party resources instead.

-There's so much gear and so little way to know if we can equip or use it. If it is higher rank than us or is otherwise unusable to us or on our current ship, there should be some kind of RED TEXT in a clear spot noting this. The ranks that are higher than us should be RED or a reddish color. The outline of something we can't equip/use based on what we currently have available to us should be RED or reddish-colored.

You will find a considerable increase in movement speed as you approach level 50.

You can't buy stuff without a decent amount of energy credits, so don't bother.

There's no legend, but if you mouse over it you can read the NPC's name. Might be a legend on STOWiki though.

It's not an STF, and you aren't leveled up to 50... your level scales with the instance, however your weapons and ship are not upgraded accordingly. Only your hull and shields. I don't remember having such trouble with SB24 though. If you accidentally joined an instance that outranks you (not very likely), then you would indeed encounter such issues. Otherwise, the difficulty is average if you stay close to your teammates. I find that RPers (roleplayers, for those who don't know) will unconsciously do the right thing - during my own early fleet actions, I half-roleplayed as I fought, attempting to act like I wasn't a player but rather a starship captain - finding strength in numbers. :D

Did the above mentioned thing in the tutorial too, so the early game was a cakewalk. The problem is it gets harder as you approach endgame, and improvements to your ship won't compensate.

Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.p3OEBPD6HU3QI.jpg

Having been a n00b ... actually I still am ... a lot of these perspective are actually spot on. At the same time, the new player need to be self-regulating.

The game has A LOT of resources to assist the player that are not built-in, and I don't think it should be.
    * This message board
    * STO Wiki (linked from the main page
    * Memory Alpha
    * Even Star Trek Online Academy (Google them)

Players need to not rely on the game itself to learn to play, nor should they expect to *get it* within days. That is unrealistic and unfair to the player themselves!

Simply put, players need to learn how to play the game before leveling to higher ranks. I will be hard pressed to believe a first-time player who makes VA within a month is truly experienced.

Welcome to STO! Well for starters just because you can get pushed up to lvl. 50 when you're grouped with other lvl 50s doesn't mean your ship or gear can handle the fight. It's better to do the story missions till you can get at least the next level of ship, and some better equipment.
There some good and somewhat relevant information on the forums Academy page here: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/forumdisplay.php?f=127

So read this thread, actually not bad and raises a lot of fair and justified points; as one thing that will turn away or bring a player into a game is how easy it is to grasp the concepts and play the game.

People rank up far too quickly in this game. Seems like an odd and unpopular thing to say but it's true; there's people who reach level 50 without knowing how to do things like adjust power levels, fit a ship, heal themselves and use team chat. It would actually benefit individual players in long run if they were really taught how to use and max their gear and ship at their representative levels before being allowed to rank up.

A lot of times if they are doing something that could be considered "fail" they have no idea and will not learn why. All very well stating out of game resources but how many players are going to figure out/know about these resources immediately from starting the game?

One thing I will say that all players should have (and quite a lot lack) is common sense.

I've been playing MMOs since EQ (in 1999) - and while the first gen MMOs were this way, and it seems to be a continuing trend; I honestly think it's BAD if a player new to MMOs can't be given enough basic info via the tutorial to get a handle on, and enjoy his/her game experience. No, they can't put all the more advanced minutiae into the game; but if you can't impart the basics in an understandable way for newbies, the tutorial has a problem.

(And unfortunately, I'd be a bad one to consult, as in any new MMO, I always have an idea on how to figure it out as most follow the same pattern; and WILL go looking for outside resources; but again, that would be a foreign idea for someone new to the MMO genre.)

    Welcome to STO.

Here is my advice to easy you into the game and get a 'Star Trek' experience.

    1) Take you time and just do the Storyline Missions. This will slowly teach yo the basics. There us a complete list you can print and tick off here ....

    http://www.stowiki.org/List_of_missions#Federation_Missions

    2) Do some Explore between the Story missions to break it up. These are random encounters designed to do on your own.

    Have fun :)

Welcome to STO. Just an FYI though, this game is a grindfest once you hit 50. If you can still handle that, and always getting wiped in PvP by guys who have been here since beta, then keep on reading. If not, I recommend uninstall.

    So here's some basics:
Don't bother to get better than white gear until after you hit level 40. That stuff you can buy at the shipyards will carry you through until you hit 40 with moderate ease. Tbh, you actually never have to get better than mk VI gear to get to 40. After you hit 40 though, get your rear in mk X gear and then start grinding.

Also asking questions at places like ESD and DS9 will USUALLY (usually mind you, not always) elicit decent responses from some of the better players, and will also get the TRIBBLE trolled out of you too. Learn what is trolling and what is good advice, and you're golden. Also channels like PublicEliteSTF and some of the STO academy channels are good places to ask questions, since more often then not there are bored players in there looking for something to do or waiting on a cd who will answer questions.

Lastly, the forums are a good place to learn the game and hear what works and what doesn't.
It is said the best weapon is one that is never fired. I disagree. The best weapon is one you only have to fire... once. B)

Join a fleet. It may take a couple tries to get one that's a right fit for you, but fleet chat is a great way to pick up info and ask questions in-game. There's a lot of stuff about gear acquisition and optimization that I would never have learned if not for fleet chat.

There's a lot of fleets that recruit through random drive-by invites. You may have already received a few while flying around in sector space. Always say yes if you're unaffiliated, then read the fleet mission statement and check the size of the member roster to see if you want to stay.

Just a response/update on my situation.

-I'm gonna make a video right now and update this thread with another post edit once I have it uploaded to YT. It'll show what I mean about SB24 being way too tough for those under a certain gear/rank/level. Or maybe I'm just doin it wrong :P

-I'm wondering how people can trade or sell boffs. I end up just dismissing some of the ones I get for free because I don't need them or don't have any more room. :(

-To the people who posted multiple links. Some of your links don't work, the STO manual doesn't exist (gives the equivalent of a 404), the STO Wiki is terribly outdated (gave me info on stuff that isn't even in the game anymore like with some captain skill tree info), and the ONLY useful link that I found were two links with index thread and STO Academy. The others are useless/redundant. In the future some of you linking to resources might wanna double check to make sure they're updated and online.

-I appreciate all the help everyone has given, thanks :)
The STO Academy has the best info I've found so far, though the wiki has some better-organized content (skills that can be trained) in charts.
I'm a Tactical Captain and the slow-TRIBBLE speed of cruisers will have me running an escort ASAP. I might even do a science vessel for more support/healing if needed until I gear up, but escorts are where my heart is at.

EDIT: One thing REALLY bugs me. According to Memory Alpha and the Voyager episode 'Threshold', Tom Paris of Voyager used a shuttle craft to achieve Warp 10 and was traveling at 'infinite velocity'. That meant he was in every point in the universe all at the same time, pretty much. Yet now we've got stuff in STO that goes up to and past Warp 20 with zero risk? WHAT!? O_o Anyone care to explain how you can go beyond 'infinite velocity'? :P

Ninja EDIT: Ok ffs...really!? The damn tutorial on Duty Officers popped up in the middle of combat!? I closed it but now I can't re-access it!? Really!? I'm taking a break...video will be up later, maybe.

Anyone able to find a video that shows the tutorial for the Duty Officer system? I'm on the verge of just uninstalling STO here, I'm that frustrated.
I'm a very patient gamer but the sheer textbook of f-in information needed to just PLAY THE GAME is getting a bit too much. Four hours, FOUR DAMN HOURS of nothing but reading and reading through the volumes of info on this damn game and I'm still barely better off than when I started. I'm not an idiot and I 'understood' the content but it is just presented so poorly that it gets ridiculous.
How do people find this fun again? Really?

So there ya go, anyone wanna make a video that shows that Duty Officer tutorial that I missed out on, feel free (or tell me how to access it again within the game).

Threshold was... edited out(?) of ST canon. Thankfully. :)

There's the Exchange or there's manual trading. Don't worry, you'll figure it out. Right now I suggest you do what any normal non-MMO player would do and play through the campaign.

You can access the DOFF tutorial at Lieutenant Ferra, Starfleet Academy.

Edit: Oh, also, you're going too fast. Just... play your way through the regular story content, it should be enough to teach you. True though, SW:KOTOR may have given me a bit too much info, but... it should be easy.

SB24 too hard? It adapts to your level. So the NSC's are always spot on with damage and health. IF you are playing a tac in an escort :-P Always a nice and easy way to get Xp and some good loot. Dying 1-2 times isn't that bad. It helps to regroup after the reinforcements show up xD

Best place for information is this forum. Even if you don't do any PVP go check the PVP sub-forums. Tons of quality information there :-)

I need a TLDR on all this info. If I wanted to read textbooks of information I might as well cryofreeze myself and wake up in the future of the REAL Star Trek and study at the actual SF Academy. It is a bit insane of a learning curve here so I could use some help in this request.

Video tutorials. YouTube, community, whatever. Make them or link to where they're at.
I need to watch and learn, I'm a very visual learner and reading through all this is getting to be 'not fun' and making me want to just go study something that'll actually help me in r/l instead. :P

I figured out what I was doing 'wrong' with the SB24 stuff. EVERY action in SB24 is fleet-members-only except for ONE of them. The only one that is available for non-fleet people is the lowbie one that is pretty easy if you stick together. So I was trying to do level 50 content at level 6? Yeah...I'm hoping the Season 7 update helps to update this so it is made clearer.

I wonder why lowbies are even allowed to participate in this content again? If our rank isn't at a certain level then we shouldn't be allowed in, period. What happens is a lot of unknowing lowbies like myself are just cannon fodder for the NPCs and we end up failing the run (and pissing off the one or two high level players there).

I'm holding off on making/posting a video because of some out-of-my-control issues that caused my entire YT and Google account to go poof. :(

So then, video tutorial links or make some and post em! Engage! =D

Ugh, will you AT LEAST learn that FLEET ACTIONS are not called "SB24 stuff"!?

No wonder everybody in the thread misunderstood your posts. But anyway, yeah, you should only participate in SB24 (the fleet action named SB24, not any fleet action ) at this point. Leave fleet content to the high level players who actually have the ships and weapons to deal with it.

Why thank you, oh great and powerful emperor...
But you have no clothes, what shall you do? O_O

    *trollface*

Seriously though, you come across as a condescending klorgbakh. I mentioned 'SB24 fleet action' in my first and subsequent posts here.

I was hoping that the Season 7 UI update would include the recommended rank/level for certain stuff so that newbies like myself don't mistakenly join stuff that isn't designed for them. I also suggested that they perhaps just flat out put a limit on those below a certain rank/level from joining those level 50 SB24 fleet actions.

I'm appreciative of all the feedback I've gotten here so far, so at least now I can help others who have the same questions.

... And there you go again, stating that SB24 is a level 50 fleet action. IT. IS. NOT. Unless you hit level 50 or are in a private instance with the enemy level set to 50. Which I seriously doubt. Are you sure you didn't join something like "Fleet Starbase Defense" or "Fleet Starbase Alert"? (ignore that question if you aren't in a fleet, as they're only available if you belong to a fleet or are invited by a fleet into their instance)

Again, there is no reason for Starbase 24 (the specific fleet action unlocked at what, level 4?) to scale for level 50 unless somebody with level 50 joined the instance. Which isn't likely to happen, as it requires the level 50 player to be in a team with a player of your rank - an unlikely instance when dealing with PUGs.

Do we really need a tutorial to explain the different starship types and what they can do. I mean if you read the starship types and traits you would learn Tactical type starships are faster, more maneuverable, and smaller, but lack the ability to sustain a lot of damage. Science type starship are balanced I all aspect and are meant more in a support aspect. Then the, there's the Engineering type starships, though slow they can take a lot of hits.

    Well that was fast...
As per my simple request, the level ranges have been added to the SB24 PvE queues.

That was surprisingly efficient. Wish they'd put it in the patch/maintenance notes :)

Referring to SB24 there's only one thing you can do there at low levels only if you are not in a fleet. The other ones that require a fleet have a maximum level of 50 and everyone is (poorly) scaled up to level 50 when doing them.

Now that the level ranges have been added, I see why they let lowbies into these high-level runs. Fleet members wanting to power level fleet lowbies can make their own instances and do it pretty easily. I still feel they should restrict the fleet-only ones to at least a certain high-end rank, but meh. Baby steps.
