ICONIC PVP BATTLES!!! A suggestion that could be a huge success. But hear me out and then tell me what you guys think.
Pilot Khan's Miranda! Fly the Enterprize-E as Captain Picard! Decimate your enemies as Captain Sisko in the original Defiant! Or..., menace the Federation in the I.K.S. Kang..., harry your foes as Captain Nero in his borg retrofitted mining ship! Any epic ship from any epic faction. Cardassian, Breen, Klingon, Romulan, Federation, Borg etc. If it made history it makes it into the list.
Or, go to ground and fight as your favorite characters from every movie and each series: Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Sulu, Riker, Data, LaForge, Nero, Alternate Universe Kirk, Dahar Master Kang, Sela, Khan, Gul DuKat, Major Kira, General Chang, Mirror Universe Kirk, The Duras Sisters, etc.
Now lets talk battlegrounds..., Fight at the Battle of Khitomer..., Battle through the wreckage of Wolf 359, wage war for the control of Deep Space 9..., even assaults on faction homeworlds like Vulcan, Andoria, Qo'nos, Earth...,
And the explanation for how any of this is possible? Holodeck strategic exercises.
Think about it like vs. games where you don't have to tweek out specs or work on gear. Each ship you select has a static build that never changes from player to player. Each ship has its strengths and weaknesses..., and to unlock the more epic ships you have to win (for certain ship unlocks) or participate in enough pvp matches to earn their use.
The game I got this idea from is a major comic book company and the game itself is the largest superhero/villain mmo out. Having this as an alternate PvP system would liven up the PvP side of the game and get people playing PvP that don't necessarily have the time or hundreds of millions of EC it takes to buy the absolute best gear. (Things now necessary to even cut your teeth in PvP these days.)
I also think this would bring back a lot of the hard core literalist style fans that only ever wanted to take their favorite Star Trek heroes and villains out for a spin. I mean who wouldn't want to PvP as Data..., whether on ground or piloting his Nebula from the series? I would. How about you guys?
It would cost a lot of money to do it with little to

I'd be happy if they made separate queues for premades and pugs, as well as adding proper mark choice for fleet and rep grinds on top of the usual rewards.... that alone would bring life to PvP more than anything else.
Yeah, and all sorts of different formats. I agree with you 100% Starcommando101. I mean, we have 4 pvp maps in space. Just 4. But in "ICONIC PvP" it would take you to epic areas with significance to the series and movies. And maybe Perfect World servers might not be able to handle 40 pvp'ers in the same que, higher numbers on either side could be awesome. And some of them might even have newer goals. Like a shuttle pvp where the object is for each team to escort their crippled capital carrier across the battlefield to the other team's spawn point while attempting to take out the other team's carrier. Cool right?
It would cost a lot of money to do it with little to

Alright..., easy done. In both ground and space you start out with only one character. So say in space everyone has to start out with Khan piloting his Miranda. Then, through earning enough..., I don't know, lets say Marks of Strategy..., you unlock ships that increase in marks and to some degree quality. Here's the kicker. People who don't want to nug their way through hundreds of pvp battles can jump to better quality ships by purchasing certain ships/characters from the Z-Store that you can't earn with any marks at all. Exclusive to the store and allows people a jump up the ladder so it makes it easier to earn the better ships/captains that require a certain amount of wins instead of just participation marks which we'll call..., "marks of victory".
And if the Z-Store Iconic ships/Captains are popular and can't be earned through game play but only through the store..., I don't know about you, but if the only way I could access Commander Data or Lt. Worf for ground..., or fly the Enterprise-F or say "Warship Voyager" was to buy them with Zen...
Yeah, I'd pay for that. And since there are so many Iconic Captains and Ships, having a few set aside for purchase and putting the rest in the list of ships and captains to earn through gameplay would most likely work out extremely well and create another source of revenue for Perfect World. On top of that, it would probably appeal to a segment of our gamer community that hasn't been addressed and stimulate greater involvement and even an influx of new players that aren't interested in the rediculous amount of study and vast intricacies required to build ships or ground characters capable of just surviving PvP.
Cause lets face it..., if you aren't farming or spending vast amounts of money to buy things with zen to sell for EC so you can afford the gear you need and the ships you need to put that gear in..., you can't compete with the sharks that dominate our pvp system so thoroughly that it discourages all newcomers.
But this is a system where we could not only PvP on the ground or in space with our favorite characters or in our favorite ships, but it also levels the playing field. The ship comes as is with the set powers and abilities given it. Your personal character's skill tree and gear doesn't even come into play. Like a game of Mortal..., well, you know..., the character you select is the character you select. If it slings ice than it doesn't bicycle kick. You can't modify it because it is what it is. And like that game where people have preferences, but no single character is truly better than any other..., this idea would take the same approach. If you select Commander Spock for ground PvP, he's got a set of abilities that can't be altered, and maybe one or two abilities that are unique to him..., like a nerve pinch and maybe a quote from him when you use it on someone like..., "I find your actions to be highly illogical"
Anyways..., bit of a rabbit trail there but there's money in it for Perfect World and I think it would add a much needed reprieve for those of us who have already ground out every last bit of end game content and need something fair and less frustrating than the colorless PvP system we have now where he who has the best bought ship and gear and whose team uses the best macro wins.

I really love this idea, esp. the reenactment part. And I am alllll for revitalizing PvP. It is interesting to hear that you got this idea from a comic book. In fact, the Colosseum in Rome played host to reenacted naval battles. So there is along history of humanity loving to reenact its historic battles.
In spite of your great idea, I doubt Cryptic will invest in such a project--at least not for a few seasons.
Thing is..., there's money in it. And I don't think it would be too big a project considering this past season Perfect World brought us Starbases, several fleet mark events, and a vault shuttle event. Next season..., which you can check out now on Tribble server has a reputation system added in with similarities to the starbase system, a new STF, several new Romulan missions tied into the reputation system..., and ultimately if any of you get the chance to take a look, you'll see they've been putting together a ton of stuff these last two seasons and I truly believe that this idea isn't too big to fit into an upcoming season.
They've made plenty of money off of us. Each new season keeps bringing us more content than the last. Obviously it's not something to ask for this upcoming season..., but I brought this idea up to my fleet and they loved it. I figure if more people comment on this post, it might generate enough buzz for Perfect World to take it into consideration. But I thought I'd get the community thoughts on it first to see if you guys would be excited to see something like this.
Forgive any incoherence..., getting a bit too tired to be posting.

Please refrain from complaints on the current pvp system. This wasn't a post meant for people to vent frustration on how the game currently works. It's a post about introducing a new idea and seeing how much people liked it. Then..., seeing how many people we can get to post their thumbs up so that Cryptic takes enough of an interest in it to work it into an upcoming season.
So please, people who like the idea..., and heck, people who don't..., spam the heck out of this post and lets generate some buzz.
I love the idea. There could be several avenues to open up higher tier characters, maps or situations.
1. Tie access to the next tier to the current lock box system (Money) - Could be limited time
2. Earn access to the next tier through PVP (Time Played)
3. Fleet reputation or whatever they're going to name it (Contributions)
4. Lobi Crystals - Could be a limited time unlock
5. Gold Pressed Latinum - Finally something to do with all that latinum sitting in your stats.
All or some of these ideas could generate multiple sources to get into the Iconic PVP tiers.
You would get a standard setup based on the character/ship of the story and you play with that setup. I think this idea would be great and could tie into the Starbase and Reputation system in place.
To expand on what I said earlier, how about massive 20vs20 or even 30vs30 (high as it can go) of a full scale massive battle between 2 or 3 factions for control of a territory. Have Admiral Quinn on ESD and the Klingon/Romulan counterpart directing the whole thing from ESD. Have the battle streamed live to ESD so people can see everywhere how their brave Starfleet or brave Klingon/Romulans are defending their name in combat. Have environmental anomalies in battle to help make the battle more than pew pew pew you die and more strategic and logistic. Admiral Quinn assigns these Fleet Admirals to head fleets (hell have fleets fight on the front lines) to carry out assignments. Whether it is on the front line or even behind enemy lines. There is so much that can be done with PvP
Also, the idea to fight along side the greats as the OP has stated, "Or, go to ground and fight as your favorite characters from every movie and each series: Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Sulu, Riker, Data, LaForge, Nero, Alternate Universe Kirk, Dahar Master Kang, Sela, Khan, Gul DuKat, Major Kira, General Chang, Mirror Universe Kirk, The Duras Sisters, etc." how about you can be able to fight along side them on the holodecks on your starbase for more experienced players (some battles are access from starbases only) and most of the icons you can fight with (or fight as....) during training simulations on Starfleet Academy. These battles will teach players not only teamwork, but strategy.

2) You cannot "Kirk It" in every ship
3) You are going to die, just get back up
I dunno... does the game even support that many players in one spot without turning into a DS9 lagfest?
Yeah, I don't think it does considering the servers can't even handle effects renderting in a 5v5 in normal pvp. They'd have to invest ludacris amounts of money just to buy the servers capable of handling pvp battles of that magnitude.
However..., it would be nice.
But keep adding to the idea guys. I think what's most important about this thread is that we come to it with creative ideas and generate a buzz over the core concept!
ok another idea, how about for territorial battles, when you win in space combat, it doesn't guarantee that you have taken over the system, you need to actually win in ground combat to totally take over the system.
two battles going on at once.
For instance. If the Klingons lose in space but win on the ground, Starfleet can blockade them and prevent the Klingons from beaming down reinforcements until they lose in space (hell even if they add a way to sneak past the blockade),
So since Starfleet can't seem to take them on ground, they will have to call in more reinforcements to deal with it.

Yeah, make the Klingon/Federation War mean something tangible in the game. Make it so that the only sectors in the game that aren't under territorial dispute are the home sector blocks or the sector blocks that are being reserved for other future factions.
I forget the TNG episode, but the Feds were trying to stay out of the Klingon civil war after Gowron took power. They supported him, but his enemies, the Duras, were leaning on the Romulans for supplies. To counteract this, the Feds sent a fleet to the KDF/Rom border and set up a tachyon detection grid (the console on the Neb). Data was given command of a neb and was able to use some photons to expose some warbirds --- who then realized that the jig was up and left, leaving the Duras on their own.
But you want revitalization? Go into the queues. Show that there's a player base before asking for stuff.
To an extent, this is kind of how it goes, eh?
Far too often, players have told devs that the players will do X if the devs make it. Too often, the devs do X...but the players do not do it. It's not really what they wanted - not what they thought it would be...something that not everybody wanted, etc, etc, etc.
Show them there is a thriving community on the other hand - a community that's a source of revenue - then they may toss something out there, see how it goes - if it goes well, the community continues to thrive or even grow...then they toss out the next thing, etc, etc, etc.
In reading this thread - it made me think of some discount game you might find in a bargin bin at Wal-Mart, tbh... some people still think of STO as a MMORPG (as crazy as they may sound) - suggesting that they remove aspects of that just to make it a TPS/FPS game...meh.
