So I've been on a pretty hard sci-fi trip lately, I've watched all the "mainstream" sci-fi movies (star trek, star wars, etc) and I've just finished Firefly and Serenity. I kept hearing people praise that show, like an underground community, so I decided to give it a chance and I loved it. I was somewhat depressed after watching series, not in a bad way, on the contrary I was mostly depressed that it didn't last longer and it didn't get a film series like most successful sci-fi series.

Anyways, I'm looking to watch more specific type of sci-fi, mostly space adventures with either the same type of grit as the original Star Wars and Firefly. I love Star Trek but I've watched TNG, DS9, and Voyager over the summer so I'm not looking to something as thought provoking as Trek, but something with a little more focus on characters and adventure.

I hope that makes sense and I look forward to seeing what kind of suggestions people can come up with.

Have you seen Battlestar Galactica? original and/or the remake?
Have you seen Stargate SG-1? Atalantis? Universe?

Space: Above and Beyond (A show that was as great as Firefly, and unfortunately suffered the same fate.)
    Doctor Who
    Babylon 5
The Presidential Campaign (Wait. That's a horror movie. Never mind.)
    The Wing Commander animated series
    Cowboy Bebop
    Space Battleship Yamato
    ...
    and finally
    ...
Super Dimension Fortress Macross (Or Robotech, if that's all you can find. And Robotech is available on Hulu Basic.)

New battlestar galactica is you like gritty
babylon 5 if you like epic
farscape is you like a bit quirky
lost if you like mystery (not true sci-fi but it has certain fantastical elements to it)
fringe if you like x-files with a bit more humour
stargate sg1 (then atlantis and universe) if you like light hearted adventure.

or all of them if you're like me.

keep in mind that not everyone starts brilliantly (think tng season 1) so some of them you have to stick through a certain level of dodgy stuff but every one of these series is very enjoyable.

Blake's 7, if you don't let the shoestring budget and sometimes ropey special effects put you off it's a good one to go with for it's 4 series, and it's ending is a cult classic moment

Sea Quest! I'm surprised someone else knows about it.

B]Psycho-pass[/B, an anime that is on this season, is pretty neat as well.

"Last Engage! Magical Girl Origami-san" is in print! Now with three times more rainbows.

Yeah, had to google for it to refresh my memory, but the first thing I saw was this giant squid submarine and I was thinking, I thot it was a shark-shape!

Nostalgia goggles make everything seem more awesome.

Not set in space but quirky and very well acted is 'A Town Called Eureka'.

Had two seasons on Sky then ventured over to sciyfy channel for a further three seasons. Very very good acting, storyline and overall plot makes it well worth watching. But again its not space based.

They don't make a lot of that. Sadly, to name for example the previous poster's contribution, most of what's called "SF" these days is only called that cause they don't know what to call it, but can't very well sell it as "random BS". Meanwhile, actual sci-fi tends to get cancelled after season 1.

Anyway, adventures in space, Babylon 5 was already pointed out to you. It's got a few strange bits, but it's generally very good. It was followed by a single season series called Crusade, which was rather crappy in my opinion, but did have Trek's space exploration and Star Wars' space wizards, so who knows? Also, Space: Above and Beyond is another oldie. One season only, military sci-fi. These are all also fairly gritty.

A bit less space, but pretty dark still, would be Total Recall: 2070. Also just the one season. Basically a sci-fi cop show. Personally I would add Charlie Jade to the list, a somewhat obscure, I believe South African/Canadian show dealing a private investigator and three parallel universes, which ran for one season. Doesn't feature space at all, though.

And hopping back in space, they did a show called Defying Gravity a year or two back, pretty near-future setting, follows a group of astronauts training and departing to go on a tour of the solar system for reasons they're not completely privy to. Now, pattern recognition test: Can you guess how many seasons that went for?

I'll have to leave it at that before I get into these cheap B-movie pre-makes that arrive ahead of every new hollywood sci-fi piece and drive myself to letterbomb SyFy channel.

Also, Dune. (Not a series, so much, as two miniseries. Still a solid six hours or so of something different. There's also a movie predating it, which I personally don't care for, and which tells the story of the first miniseries.)

Oh, and Iron Sky. Largely crowdfunded, done by the guys who did StarWreck (after you've watched B5, watch that one for a laugh, if you don't mind subtitles), though much more professionally (very well) done this time. Not recommended for Germans or Americans who haven't a great sense of humor, however. Be warned. No one gets out of that movie looking good.

Is anyone here a Dune fan? Among my favourites was Sci-Fi's Children of Dune miniseries. Although, you don't get the whole impact of that unless you've watched the original Sci-Fi Dune trilogy (or if you are short on time, the Dune movie covers the important stuff).

As my wife puts it, "It's a soap opera in a desert." It's technically a space opera.

There's an animated Wing Commander ?

Agree to all them (S:AAB is better than Firefly IMHO) and will add Blakes 7 to your list.

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

    I would recommend Exosquad http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106842/

Great 90s cartoon space opera, which had great serialized storytelling, compelling characters and performances, and took itself seriously, something quite unusual in 90s cartoons.

Also if you're looking for great sci-fi, check out http://arrowheadmovie.com/

A group of independent Australian filmmakers are working on a sci-fi flick. They've made a short movie called Arrowhead: Signal which is really cool and they are fund raising to make the whole feature-length film. Pretty great stuff.

And if you watched after the credits, it led up to yesterday. 10-11-12 and the official FB page did something based on the film.

planetes (series), bladerunner (movie), appleseed (movies), ergo proxy (series), redline (movie), total recall (movie) trying to stick to the grittier outlook types. several are anime titles...while western tv/movies don't often have much it's pretty popular in japan.

if you don't have objections to watching anime i'd also recommend:
a certain scientific railgun and a certain magical index. fred saberhagen like mix of worlds. science and technology vs magic. (series) while some of it can be fairly light-hearted...there's a consistent undertone of what lengths people will go to for power.
ghost in the shell...though heavy on social commentary >.> (series and movies)
king of thorn, apocalyptic sci-fi (movie)
    akira (movie)

since i'm late to this thread everyone else has already posted what i would have >.< besides the few above. of those, only planetes and redline actually have any spacecraft. rest take place on a single planet albeit in futuristic environments.

Personally my favourite has to be Babylon 5.

I'd recommend sticking to that OP. Great lore, great themes, great characters and character depth, and loads of great episodes.

If you do decide to give that a go, I'd recommend watching the the prequal movie "In the beginning" followed by the pilot movie "The Gathering", and then the series (The way I've listed it is in chronological order for the B5 timeline).

I'd recommend Seaquest too. All seasons can be a bit hard to find on dvd, or even vhs, depending on your region. =(

um, Cleopatra 2525 was a bit of fun too as well (sort of set in the matrix era) as well as Space Precinct (ah beat me to it garaks31 ^^).

    Earth 2 was decent too.

No mention of Earth - Final Conflict yet? Another Roddenberry inspired production.

Oh man, the 90's-00's were full of shows like that.

It doesn't appear that anyone has mentioned "Blakes 7". Old 70's British Sci-Fi series. It had the cheesiest special effects you've ever seen but made up for it (in the opinions of legions of fans) with excellent writing, great characters and some fairly spiffy costumes... made it easy to ignore things like; space ship models on strings, 2d space ship cutouts, obvious cardboard sets and rubber monsters heheheheh
