Because it gets more people in than "Get very basic access for free and end up spending a lot more than $15 a month if you actually want anything in the game that has any real use".
I'm not sure I agree 100% about the get anything of real use in STO I think there's plenty without paying. BUT I agree 100% about the end up spending a lot more than the 15/MO subscription model and it still amazes me how people are willing to pay so much for a game. Heck I could almost understand here but for phone and facebook games??? Sometimes I swear I believe in de-evolution.
i never purchased zen with real money. i still have all the z-store ships i ever desired, only through the dilithium exchange.
sure it takes a month to gather enough dilithium for a new ship, but i only buy stuff i'm 100% sure it is worth it.
If you don't spend anything on the stupid stuff, like lockbox keys, etc...you can actually get from time to time a new ship.
You are mistaken here. SWTOR is going FTP. It has not happened yet, but when it does it will not be limited to level 10. What you are referring to above is just their game demo: anyone can play to level 10. After that you must buy the game and pay a Sub feel. STO had the same thing prior to FTP - most MMOs have that. WoW goes all the way to level 20, IIRC. But that has nothing to do with SWTOR's conversion to FTP later this year.
Well I wasn't going to post in this thread again after having my post removed, its a bit odd you can quote it seeings a mod removed it, Are you a mod is disguise lol?
I have an EA dev on my fiends list in Steam, I'm telling you right now Star Wars will never be completely free in the same way STO is. They may put the f2p level cap up to 20 but thats as far as it will go, main reason is the game cost 200 million to make and they have not come close in getting that back and there is no way EA would risk loosing that.
Only other mmo game that is remotely close to the way STO f2p model works would be "Pirates of the Burning Sea" by Flying Lab Studios and marketed by Sony in fact their f2p model is slightly better than STO's because you can buy 1 month subscription and let your subscription lapse and you instantly become a life member and no its not a scam its deliberately set up like that and if you used to play the game when it was on subscription you may also log back in and Sony will make you a life member but in saying that does cost money well just 1 months worth anyway and we are supposed to be talking about f2p lol. But you can play almost all aspects of PotBs for free other than building ships unless you want to create like 20 accounts lol and the other thing its a pvp map so you can attack people at will in certain areas.
But I'm still sticking to my guns about no game is f2p because you need the internet to play it with in the first place and its also the line I use with my mates trying to get them into mmo's cause every single time they come out with,
"I'm not paying to play" and I'm like "but you already are, how much did you spend on your gamming pc when you could have just bought a console for a 10th of the price or how much do you spend on your net plan a month?"
Then I'll compare how much money can be spent at the pub in a couple of hr's compared to a paid subscription for a whole month of entertainment.
I did get a couple into STO but they normally play fps games so this wasn't really their thing.

Sorry but its not going to be fully f2p, you may want re-read that announcement.
Also when EA announce something I would take it as a grain of salt like they said it would be available for everybody but then a short time before release they declared it will only be released to people in North America.
As I said before the game cost $200 000 000 to make they have not come close to making that back why would they risk loosing that by releasing a full f2p version?
A portion of the game will be f2p but you will not be able to play the entire game for free and thats a FACT!.

no it will not be completely free 2 play thats true, but the story and all classes (not all races) are available up to level cap.
raid is restricted, PVP is restricted, and many other things. Still it is a nice RPG to play...story is more or less immersive. i would recommend it.
the 200 million developement cost was nearly brought in again through the sales..thats what i read about it. i mean more than 2.45 million copies sold. 125 million dollars just there...
i'm not sure if they broke even, but they got close to it. and it is out for only 9 month.
It clearly states, everyone can play to level 50. There are no class restrictions, but there are some race restrictions. Warzones and flashpoints have limited access. Free players won't have access to the end-game operations, but a friend who is in the ftp playtest tells me you can buy access to them individually from their store with their coinage system.

Yep and thats all I was trying to say but others just wouldn't believe me, yes you can play most aspects of the game for free but if you want to play the whole game it will cost real money and theres no arguing with that now seeings 2 people have posted the relevant links.
now that we know the exact meaning of both F2P models, lets compare them.
...done...
i like the one cryptic/PWE is offering much better...THX;)
i only want to repeat what i said above...
if the ship prices were half as much, and refined dilithium was twice as hard to get, i would actually consider investing real money from time to time. 20 euros for a single ship (basically only good for 1 char) is simply too much IMHO.
i know it is simple to argue against my idea, but for me it is too expencive to buy a ship out of my real money pocket, or atleast i'm not willing to spend it...and surely not spend money on lockbox keys costing 1 euro and getting "virtually" nothing out of it 95% of the times.

Well, reading through your posts you first said level 10, then you said level 20. Both of those statements are wrong. The truth is you can play all the way to end-game for free. If you wish to play end-game operations you can subscribe or you can buy them from their store. That is really not any different then many 'hybrid' ftp games like Lord of the Rings which has some subscriber content in its store. You will also earn a grinding currency while playing TOR which you can use to buy those operations; which can make it free depending on how much you grind.

Yeah I still prefer the POTBS f2p model over STO's because you can play the entire game for free and if you want to go up to life time it will only cost $15 where as STO will cost $300 but on the same token POTBS isn't as popular and Cryptic actually listens and answer the community so in that sense STO is better.
As for Star Wars I ain't touching it at all, I was to annoyed at release when they said Australia couldn't have it along with half the world and the only space battles in it are single player the rest is just avatar combat so I'll stay with STO.

Mate I'm agreeing with you on your last post why are you nit picking?
The level caps where just examples all I was saying was the Entire Game will not be free exactly what your saying.
Surely the idea is you play for free but as you use the game, you pay money? Top-up with extras and so on.
On my old phone this is called Pay As You Go not Free to Call.
Many people, including my brother, have gotten filthy rich without paying anything, recently he bought the 5000 zen + bonusses when it was cheaper, but before that he lots of extra inventory and bank slots, 4 extra char slots, Galor, Jem Hadar, Defiant with cloak and the Odyssey bundle while still having 1000+ zen left.
The simple fact is that there are many ways to make good money and invest in the future and with that you can get zen (contraband is an easy way to get Dil if you are rich enough), not to mention that Marauding assignments on the KDF side is a good way to get contraband even if you are poor.
In the end if you play well enough, you don't need to pay anything.
This game is free to play. Yes It requires zen if you want to purchase in the c-store but that's what the dilithium exchange is for. Folks who don't want to take the time to earn Dilithium buy zen and sell it. I have bought so many items grinding for Dilithium then exchanging it for zen. The only reason I ever bought zen was to support this MMO and to keep it going. If all free to play members just invested about $20 a year, they would be well off and able to continue this game.
Right now I'm saving Dilithium and Zen for the operations Oddysey Cruiser. Won't cost me a dime as long as I grind for it. Same with keys, and c-store BOFF's.
They call it free to play as you can play at least some of the game for free to wet your appetite. It is your choice if you wish to spend money to expand on your play experience.
On a phone you cannot make calls for free or do anything on the network for free and so you have to pay to do anything at all. They are not the same at all or even similar.
It doesnt matter if your free to play or not, this game has become a money grubbing **** to say the least. You think you have problems as an FTP player? What about those of us that have been with this game since day one and are Lifetime members that get screwed as much if not worse than you do hmm? This game used to be about the franchise, these days it's about who can buy Zen and TRIBBLE lock box keys to get a ship that is great in looks and design but garbage anyway. I encourage everyone on here, dont feed into it. DO NOT BUY THEIR S***. When they give us a reason to, the players have shown, that they will support this game. When I got my lifetime, It was 400 dollars. A far cry for a few keys to get a ship that looks awesome, but cant get the job done in any fashion of the real game. It's all about status and keeping up w the jones's. They have not listened the community as whole since day one. That is why we still have no new content just a starbase system and RPG system that no one uses or can take advantage of, that small fleets fleets have no chance or hope of achieveing any of the tasks. It's a joke. Well intentioned, but a joke none the less. This game is heading down a bad road and has been for at least 3 seasons now. I'm sorry to say that I bought a lifetime membership to it as I for one will not be putting it to good use untill they show me a reason why I should even give a S***. Mr. Stahl you Have control, the ball is in your court here. Please have you system and devs stop TRIBBLE those who got you a MMORPG game of the year a few years back and GET IT RIGHT FOR A CHANGE. I understand your team and you need to make money but, at the expense of what?

this post feels like an outcry from someone who wants everything but doesn't want to play for it or drop the money to do so. I understand that you feel entitled to get stuff for free, because you dropped 400 dollar once...but guess what that doesn't mean you get everything handed to you. You already get something for it each month.
so either play the game and earn EC and dilithium to buy the new stuff, or drop some more money...you can surely hit the 1000 dollar watermark and even more.
Just be more selective in the things you want to get in the game and you'll be fine. The Lockbox stuff is just not meant for everybody to have, deal with it.
Of all the F2P games I have tried, this game gives you the most options, you can play the entire game and farm the gear you want in time. I have spent some cash on the game, but it was for uniforms I wanted, plus I wanted to keep the game alive. Developers have to eat too.

A lot of it seems greedy though with their movement of from account wide unlocks to per character. Which seems to only benefit the newer players who are not putting much into multiple characters. As for those of us here long before F2P hitting this game with many characters in a sense we have multiple issues with this. A big thing is that they want us to pay in one form or another to support the game/themselves saying it will be used to hire new employees/make new content but especially in the case of the KDF there are quite a few of us who have supported them but yet our money was not good enough for them because we are not the majority.
I remember one time they claimed they have to make stuff for everyone back when they were just making art changes in the game but obviously not it appears.

I'm also disturbed with the less account wide unlocks. Luckily the only things I've wanted were account so far but some of them I agree are nothing but money grabs.
And for the person that mentioned that EA was fine as they had a few good quarters.... That's the problem with almost everything. Short term profits over long term which is also why I find it hard to see games lasting more than a couple years. The day's of EQ and WOW decades are probably over which is sad and I truly hope I'm wrong but as long as it's about quarterly profit instead of yearly or more then the models won't probably change.
Time = Money, so you can substitute Time for Money, or Money for Time. That's really the beauty of the Dilithium Exchange, IMO. Players who are Time Rich can buy Zen. Players who are Time Poor can buy Zen to buy Dilithium. Either type of player can use Zen to go to the store to buy ships, costumes, services, etc.
Its flippin' genius, IMO. Think EVE was the first game with anything along these lines.
As a life-time account holder who has also spent more than a few dollars in the store, I'm quite happy with the arrangement. Having all these players who can play for free/cheap means more of my friends can play regardless of money being tight or they're already subbed in another game (or two). There's loads more people for folks to play with! And, there's (hopefully) more than enough folks paying money into the game to keep the bills paid.
My blog! Zen|Dilithium tracking on Thursdays http://samonmaui.blogspot.com As a lifetime member of STO, I officially became a financial liability as of April 2012 when compared to a subscriber.

Oh so it's "just" $400? Do you realise how much money that is?!?! You could buy years of subscription time with that money, why do you think he is angry? Got every right to be!
No such thing as double dip in gaming these days, just quadruple times ten dip. Whole industry can go blow itself.
Marketting creatures do not think like us humans. They are undoubtedly intelligent, but nonetheless unable to grasp the meaning of "honesty". It's like a physiological limitation.
As a result, "p2w" becomes "f2p".
No such thing as double dip in gaming these days, just quadruple times ten dip. Whole industry can go blow itself.
You think it's just happening in this industry? You think Apple didn't have the iPhone 6 half-way through development even before they introduced the 5 this month?
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
Some of you people are just silly(to put it nicely), and here is why:
1) You can play every single mission in the game for free.
2) There are some cool things in the c-store, but you dont actually need any of them
3) You can actually get the things in the c-store for FREE by trading dilithium.
You can get more FREE to play than that. And as far as "P2W" goes, what exactly are you "winning"? We all get the same reward for the missions we play, so having a ship with slightly better stats isnt going to get you anything better than what someone else gets.
This is a complete and utter lie. You can play every single mission in the game for free, and you get dozens of uniforms and ships for free. Do you get every single ship and uniform you may want? No, but saying "you get nothing for free" is just a lie.

As a lifetime member of STO, I officially became a financial liability as of April 2012 when compared to a subscriber.
Well if you look many games are going F2P they make More money Doing it this way then with a Monthly sub.
This is a complete and utter lie. You can play every single mission in the game for free, and you get dozens of uniforms and ships for free. Do you get every single ship and uniform you may want? No, but saying "you get nothing for free" is just a lie.
