How many times do you have to watch your ship explode before this Mission ceases to be enjoyable?

As a Tactical Officer, I had understood that my ship would be fairly tough. However, the Heavy Plasma Torpedoes just slice effortlessly through my shields and the ship explodes - again and again and again ......

How are we supposed to complete the Mission?

I am a Captain 30, my ship is similar to the Defiant and the enemy is a Reman D'Deridex.

Evidently Worf is a much better Captain than me.

The Mission is supposed to be for a Captain 30. Am I supposed to go away and explore some uncharted systems to gain a few more levels?

How can I get shields that can resist Plasma Topedoes?

D'Deridexes are a pain in the rear, particularly at lower levels. The number one tip I can give you: Get polarized hull I. Activate it when he kicks the tractor beam on, because I've found that almost always is when he fires several Heavy Plasmas in a row.

I'm afraid your ship isn't that tough defensively - Escorts are probably the most fragile; they make it up in being the most damaging.

Trying to attack the sides might also help. If all else fails, ask a friend to do the mission with you (make sure you're the team leader and he balances his level with yours)

You can shoot those plasma torpedoes down.

Don't stay in the forward arc, stay to the D'Deridex's flanks, then he has no tractor beam, no plasma torpedoes.

What the above poster said, Polarize Hull and also Attack Pattern Omega are also really helpful for getting out of the tractor beams, and thats really when the trouble starts, because once you are tractored, the torpedoes come a 'flyin.

    Thanks.

Don't think I have Polarize Hull, but I may have Attack Pattern Omega. I will give that a try. :)

also try and avoid using fire at will (if you have it on a boff) until he fires the heavy torps. be careful here cos he often fires of a single to fool you and then the next cycle (while your faw is still in cooldown) throws out the 5 in a row that are killers.

Actually, no. Escorts have the lowest hull and lowest shields of all the ship classes. The ships are for dealing damage, not for survivability.

    Oops.

That would explain why my Science Officer character (more or less retired now at Vice Admiral 50) seemed a lot tougher than my current Tactical Officer.

So I suppose I need an Engineering Officer to be stronger? :)

Generally speaking, ship type determines more than captain type in regards to overall tanking. Cruisers are fantastic at tanking, Escorts have a really hard time, and sci can tank well if they want, or they can load up with utility spells.

That said, Engineering captains are better at tanking than non-engineering captains flying the same ship, no matter what type of ship. Tactical captains are better at doing damage than non-tactical captains flying the same ship, and sci...uh...gets subnucleonic beam.

    I was assuming that:

    Tactical Officer = Escort Ships
    Engineering Officer = Cruisers
    Science Officer = Science Ships

Not sure what effect it has if you cross over between type of Officer and the default ship type.

I also had assumed the Science Officers (and Ships) would be the wimps - it seems not :)

Also watch the D'deridex's status indicator for when he queues up High Yield Torpedoes, and either get into his side arcs or Evasive out of range until that 30 seconds is up. Time for your skills to recharge anyways. Also some kind of spamsweeper ability like Scatter Volley 1 or Fire At Will 1 will help neutralize both the torps and the cloaking mines.

The D'deridex's entire skillset is built around "I hold you in place, then hammer you," so if you take one of those halves away he becomes much less dangerous. Honestly I have more trouble with Mogai's than the big birds.

usr cannon scatter volley to get rid of the hvy plasma torps, if u think those are tough wait till u encounter the borg in elite stf's 1 hit nearly 100k crit from the plasma torps and they can still fire 1 hit kill invisible torps that u dont even see coming XD,

You are correct sir. The actual answer was Tactical officers do better in CRUISERS. Just think about it before you bash it. 8 weapons + whatever tactical consoles to do even more damage + your own tactical captains attack patterns + Cruisers survivability feature.

The Cruiser is supposed to be your groups tank in missions. Yet for some reason I see way too many Escorts being flown by tactical officers who wonder why they keep exploding non-stop.

Tell you what, go find your hotkey list for space, make sure you set your redistribute shields hotkey. You'll need this. Next time your in combat, press that Redistribute shields hotkey every 4 seconds when your shields are looking like swiss cheese. Then all your shield recovery buffs actually do WAY more then they used to.

Things to destroy those heavy plasma torpedos include:
    A. Automated defense turret consoles
    B. gravity wells
    C. tractor beams
    D. tractor beam repulsors
    E. running away from the torpedo
    F. shooting the torpedo (admitedly the worst option at times)
    G. using brace for impact and hull resistance buffs. (last ditch effort)

** F is bad choice as it takes a few shots and you have to start before it gets under 3km really.

Option D in this case is ironically best. Its Lieutenant skill level and it also counters those tractor beams that grab you. As they break at 5KM the tractor beam repulsors push opponents past 6km's. I've seen a few get thrown to nearly 8KM before.

**Note - tractor beam repulsors do not work on borg cubes

So you don't have to stick to your own 'standard' type of ship?

If that is true then a Tactical Officer in a Cruiser should be worth a try :)

Basically when the ship your fighting tractor beams you, or their tractor beam mines. You can use tractor beam repulsors to break that hold they have on you. This also works to auto target and destroy heavy plasma projectiles and mines.

Yeah, Putting tactical officers in escorts is downright silly at times. Unless your a veteran to the game, that setup can make your gameplay much much harder because you just simply take too much aggro especially in groups.

the thing to remember is when you put a tac officer in a cruiser you sacrifice firepower and maneuverability for survivability and the only difference between an escort and cruiser is 10,000 hp in the hull and about 2,000 in shields and the main key to surviving in an escort it shield management and doing HIT-n-run Tactics

nope, you can fly any ship you want, for example a tac gives a cruiser slightly more firepower while retaining most of the survivability of the cruiser (which is still much more than an escort). it's not as much firepower as a tac in an escort, and it's not as tankable as an engie in a cruiser, but it's still a decent combination.

that assumption is the normal assumption, but, Honestly any ship can be used with any class effectivly, its all about you skill build, boff skill build and weapon/gear build, A good example is the free oddy, I can be just as effective in it as my advanced escort on my tactical, I dont pop like a bop, I dont have low dps, but, i cant use even close to teh same boff skill layout, it takes a total rework of skills and tactics/thinking.

I have seen plenty of eng/sci in cruisers and sci ships that cant even take a sphere solo(kid you not).....i can take 4-6 of them solo in my FE or AE......

I can tank better in an escort.....somethings wrong there.........but, its not surprisng really, so many ppl in this game refuse to read guides or ask advice.....and you get people defending them like its ok to be a useless TRIBBLE in stf/elite stf (an example) because you cant be bothered to do a bit of reading or asking for suggestions.......

So I moved my Tactical Officer to a Cruiser, which is not allowed to use any of the more powerful weapons I had on the Escort. However, I got past the first D'Deridex, dealt with the crater and then get killed by the IKS Whatever (the named ship - which is also a D'Deridex). The lowest I got that ship was 75%.

    This is frustrating :(

Even worse, my other main character - an Engineer - is unable to get through the warp tunnel to do the slingshot into the past. So both characters are now stuck.

Equip all beam arrays on the cruiser, and use Fire at Will, and defensive abilities.

For the slingshot, fail it a couple times, and youll get an option to skip it... all youll miss out on is an accolade, but you can always go back for that later

Thanks - I did get the option to skip the slingshot eventually. That was how my original Science Officer managed the same thing. Moved on from that mission now :)

Still stuck with the damned D'Deridex though :(

Do you have Aceton Beam? That does wonders for reducing the enemies firepower.
If you have the proper skills.
The best defense is to have a proper tank with you. Depending on your timezone I a perfectly happy to run it with you.
I can be in game about 6 hours from now ( compare the posts timestamp)

STAY AWAY FROM THIS MISSION!!!!! DO NOT ACCEPT IT, YOU WILL BE DESTROYED. THE WARBIRD YOU FACE AT THE BEGINNING IS UNBEATABLE, IT WILL DESTROY YOU IN UNDER A MINUTE, IT IS WAY TOO OVERPOWERD. I went up against it in a galaxy class, and it will take all your weapons and powers offline, drain your shields fire 13 heavy plasma torpedos ( i counted them) that will go straight through your shields, and destroy you all at once, it always has weapon buffs enabled that never expire or countdown, and all weapons will disable your shields, and destroy you in one or two shots, you stand no chance, and if you manage to get the ship to 25% hull rating, your ship will automatically explode and you will have to restart the mission, regardless of the condition your ship is in. Ocassionally at 60% the ship will warp out of the system, and reappear with all stats at full strength. If you cease fire on it for more than 3 seconds the ship will repair itself to full strength in that time (i counted the seconds) this is supposed to be a soloable mission, it is not a group or fleet action, but please believe me when i say... DO NOT DO THIS MISSION UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES UNTIL THE DEV'S TONE DOWN THE WARBIRD, AND MAKE IT MANAGABLE FOR THE RANKING LISTED. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A CAPTAIN (30), BUT I'M DOING IT AT A SLIGHTLY HIGER LEVEL. YOU WILL BE DEFEATED AND DESTROYED BEFORE YOU CAN FINSIH FIRING YOUR FIRST SHOTS!!!!!

i actually got the warbird down to 25% hull, with shields almost down, my hull was at about 60% with full shields, after applying the science team, and emergency power to shields, the second it hit 25% my ship was destroyed and i had to start over. a couple of times i got the warbird down to about 60% and it warped away and then reappeared with all systems and stats at full strength (it fired two torpedos and destroyed me with 90% hull and full shields after using engeinerring team). this warbird is unbeatable, my suggestion, don't do this mission, because there are no walkthroughs, because no one i've talked to has been able to get past the warbird, or bring about 3 fleets to be destroyed along with you, because death is an experiance best shared with friends

This is just being paranoid... I beat Warbirds at Captain level. It's not easy, but it can be done, especially with the right skills.

Polarize Hull negates Tractor Beam. Engineering Team negates Viral Matrix. Tac Team will shift the shields before/during the attack. And failing that, pulling out all Damage resistance abilities works wonders to helping you survive.

Also, distance helps. Tractor Beam can only be done within 5K, Viral Matrix within 7, Photonic Shockwave within 3K... stay out of range, take potshots, and you can win easily but slowly.
    Was named Trek17.

Been playing STO since Open Beta, and have never regarded anything as worse than 'meh', if only due to personal standards.

The IKS HardNut IS beatable, especially using the tips given above, I've done it a few time now however its a pain in the proverbial and to be honest I dont find the mission that enjoyable. So now I tend to skip this mission when levelling a toon. Its the only mission I skip now that "Cage of Fire" is fixed and your boffs stay with you like good little officers :D

The mission is certainly doable. I did it in an Akira when I leveled my tac captain. The advise given to you about polarize hull or attack pattern omega certainly correct and helps to beat the mission.

I would like to add that you should avoid another mistake that is using rainbow beams/cannons. Don't put phasers, disruptors, plasma and anything else you find on a mission together. Go for one beam type and one torpedo type but don't mix multiple types of beams.

If you mix weapons you only lose weapon power extremely fast and as a result none of your weapons is doing any significant damage.

My Connie refit managed it. Granted she blew up more times than I can count, and it was a long, hard battle, but with the right combination of skills and tactics, they are beatable. And such a sense of triumph when you achieve it. If games were so easy you could just walk past everything quickly, there would be no sense in playing.
