PW/Cryptic is missing a golden opportunity for cash flow here IMO. Namely, by not offering players an opportunity to use ground mounts.
A couple that come to mind from canon are Christopher Pike's wheelchair and Q's floating throne. Not to mention the Argo from Nemesis.
But the possibilities are limitless, being that this is a sci fi game set in the far future. Jet backpacks, flying platforms, hoverounds that actually hover.
Ground mounts could actually get missions designed around them, with temporary mounts for those players who don't have one already.
The whole point behind mounts in games like WoW or SWTOR, or even flying in CO, is because you need those powers to help speed up travel when going from point A to B because that's where your quest is...
In STO you do that in your starship. None of the ground maps are really large enough to support any sort of ground vehicle, plus then you'd have to figure out what to do with the Boffs. Do they each get one? Do they ride with you?
No there's no real value in such a thing in this game.
No, we don't need ground vehicles. In my own personal opinion, we don't need much ground at all. . .just focus on space and make it awesome. People who spend all their time on ground really should just play games that are focused towards that. Forcing players who don't friggin like ground (such as myself) to participate in ground in order to complete content is irritating. Star Trek is, first and foremost, a space environment. Ground should have been limited to 'away team missions' like in exploration, and that's that.
Then again, I'm not a grounding fanboy that loves using the poorly-built ground system and the persistent UI lag that accompanies it (unless you've got an expensive and uber-powerful gaming system).
Stop coming up with hare-brained concepts, and stick with the stuff that's actually Star Trek-related. The ground rover in Nemesis was a one-off, and should remain so.

Great idea! I especially love the part about ground missions! I'd really like to see each planet have a story arc built into it. I'd love to do some actual planetary exploration. Ground vehicles would be a great part of that.
Having a mount is inanely pointless in STO, the only places where they should be useable would be missions, and most of them are in very small maps, so it really isnt worth it.
Maybe as a singular 'one off' mission like the space walk in the final jem'hadar mission, but still cant see it happening.
Also just a personal thing, never say 'X Needs' if its not needed. Rather something you WANT

Ground vehicles don't even EXIST in Star Trek. They have transporters and shuttlecraft for all that. Yeah, they had a few jeeps in Enterprise and Voyager back when they had to get involved in World War 2 and when Tucker and Archer ended up getting involved with a race of alien humans who had a pre-information age society.

No, we don't need mounts or anything to actually speed up ground movement. It doesn't work with 5 man groups anyway. You can't just expect everyone to just remain seated during combat.

It's the future! Just because it didn't exist before, is no excuse for not having it now. That sounds suspiciously like the old saw "If man were meant to fly he'd have had wings!"
I'd think jetpacks or gravity repulsors and/or vehicles that use them would be more likely now rather than less.
Having a ground vehicle in STO makes as much sense as taking your car to go to a store that's a block away. we have tranporters that drop you within walking distance of everywhere you have to go, what the hell would we even need ground transport for?

this game already falls into that category... all the maps are tiny and you transport within a minute's walking distance of everything on the ground...
not to mention on top of the tiny tiny maps there aren't even very many of them and the leveling process is short as hell (doubly so for the KDF)...
the only way this game could get any more quick and easy is if they just started everyone at max level
As others have stated, the main purpose of mounts in MMOs is to speed up travel between regions. Given that Star Trek features starships that can hop between star systems in "reasonable" amounts of time, as well as shuttlecraft and transporters, dedicated ground vehicles aren't neccessary.
Laws of thermodynamics as applied to life: 0 - You must play the game. 1 - You can't win. 2 - You can't break even. 3 - You can't quit.
The whole Argos sequence in Nemesis was just stupid, why use a dune buggy when you can cover the same ground faster in a shuttlecraft?
Ground maps in the game are simply not big enough to justify a ground vehicle, personnel moving around on Segway like pods would be well exposed targets for enemy combatants.
Jet packs might have a use if the maps were designed for multilevel activities where higher areas are only accessible with said pack, but since none of the current ground maps have this, the device isn't needed.
This isn't a game with huge ground maps like WoW etc., so a mount would be just shaving seconds off of travel times.

The Argo isn't unthinkable, but it was misused in Nemesis. There a shuttlecraft would've done easily enough. A ground vehicle like that might be good for environments where prolonged shuttle flights and transporter operation both are problematic. Charged storms and whatnot. Of course, then a vehicle that leaves the occupants exposed to those same elements is probably not the most sensible choice. Though they may be rare, there's probably circumstances where a ground vehicle would be convenient even in Star Trek. (Just not so common that they wouldn't replicate or build one when the need arose, rather than take up a parking space on the shuttledeck for a scenario they may never encounter.)
That said... there's no place for mounts in STO. Virtually all of the maps are too small to justify them. To add mounts they'd need to add new maps first that are massive enough to make people feel they need that speed boost. Moreover, with all the customization options for STO characters, the team couldn't even get all characters to sit down in the same chairs properly. Some end up sitting with their backs a foot from the backrest, others have their feet (or tail) stick through the bottom. That's a problem that'll reoccur all over again if they try to add mounts.
Rocket boots might work though. :rolleyes:

This all has me thinking though, on the subject of the larger map needed for mounts: I don't think one map would be enough to warrant buying mounts. But there could be a middle ground. A massive 'ground' map, for a shuttle mission. That would be a mount-ish experience, I think, and could be a lot of fun. And help push to sell whatever shuttle(s) they no doubt will come up with along side it.

I would like to see a new ability for Tactical officers that allows them to call in Shuttles for strafing runs.
