My beef is when someone says that my work is going to look like #*@!.
No, it won't match the concept perfectly, but I'm at least 23.45% sure my work isn't @*!#.
Sorry for the derail, what do YOU do in STO?
Don't worry, you can do a great job. You proved it on starbases. They look really nice, but people forget it.
Oh please... We all know Concept Art tends to look far different than the finished product. In this case, the finished product will look like ***** compared to the artwork.
No offense Taco, but by the developers own statements, the STO engine is far too limiting to even come close to being able to produce such artwork in real-time.
-snip-
Sorry about this. It's been a long day for me so I apologize if I have offended.
Game is on indeffinate, hiatus right now. Pending gameplay improvements. Try to log into the forums at least once a day, to see if anything got fixed. More often than not, I find out something else is broken. Check to see if ST:IS has found a publisher yet. Log off. Yep, that's about it.
In addition, you are correct that I cannot duplicate the concept in game. This is not due to "limitations of the Cryptic engine," but rather due to the inherent nature that different things are different. i.e. a painting of an apple will never, ever, ever, replicate the apple entirely.
I agree wholeheartedly that a piece of Concept Art, will never EVER look 100% true to what the finished product ends up being. However it's also been stated in other threads (by devs), that there ARE limitations in the way maps are made, such as not being able to create entire cities. I'm not entirely sure if that's true, if you look at things like the Defera ground maps. But I doubt you'll be able to re-create the Romulan Colony AND surrounding areas without seriously taxing the limitations of map size for the game.

I have no beef with the "Ops" level of the Starbases. They look pretty nice. My beef is with the lower levels which could use some SIGNIFICANT updating, so as to appear "less copied" from other sources.
You could just shut up as I know you couldn't do any better.
As Tumer said, what DO YOU do for STO? We play it. I know I couldn't make something like that. Don't criticize something you can't compare. Unless you make something better.
To whom do we report offensive comments such as this? Since the Forum update, there's no longer a "Report" button.
ANYONE who would like to report offensive posts may do so by submitting a ticket, either on the support website or to the email address.
However, before anyone rushes to do that, let me point out that there were a number of uncivil responses from more than one poster.
I'm going to suggest that folks dial it back, maybe go back and edit some posts, and get back on topic.
It's a fun topic. Hate to see it shut down for no good reason.
My views may not represent those of Cryptic Studios or Perfect World Entertainment. You can file a "forums and website" support ticket here Link: How to PM - Twitter @STOMod_Bluegeek
-Log into my main character. Check out my completed DOff assignments and in game email, check out fleet projects and fill in blanks, refine dilithium.
-Run to the nearest exchange (I usually log off at Drozana or ESD, so not too far), check prices on certain items and check my inventory of sellables.
-Check out what daily assignments are available and sign up for them (PvP, PvE scenario and Investigate Officer Reports).
-Do some quickie missions for Investigate daily, collect dilithium ore.
-Queue PvP or PvE daily (Whatever I'm in the mood for first), then play it (I tend to prefer Klingon Scout Force for PvE and HATE Gorn Minefield, and I'm good at Romulan Temple. For PvP Scenarios I prefer ground since with enough kills you can get two out of three matches out of the way).
-In between PvP matches I tend to do my DOff collecting. I check out the DOFFjobs spreadsheet, see what's popped, and travel the universe collecting missions (very important since refugees are part of my character's subsistence revenue and the purple doffs from the colony chains are needed for officer exchanges).
-Once my doff gathering and dilithium harvesting is done, I go to SFA to mulch any excess DOffs and collect more DOff missions. I will also switch alts and do recruitment missions with them at this time.
-Head to Drozana to listen to the idle chatter in between missions.
-Either fleet missions to collect fleet marks, or STF's to collect sellables and dilithium. Sometimes both, taking breaks after every three missions. After each fleet action, I also fill in more fleet project needs or sell excess loot gathered from STF's. Some days I will also use this time to switch to an alt and do the same, or do some leveling. This is usually going on for an hour or two.
-Free time! Either I keep going into STF's or fleet actions, or I use the idle time before bed to RP, chat with friends, play another game, watch some TV while being idle, etc.
-Bring my character back to the nearest exchange (Drozana, ESD, SFA, etc), then log off.
-Log into my main character and check my Doff missions and Email.
-Do a diplotmatic mission and setup new Doff missions.
-Do the Daily Foundry missions, try to get ideas for the foundry mission I'm working on.
-Log into the Foundry and play around, trying to learn new stuff.
-Maybe do an Elite STF or 2 trying to get my mk XII gear.
-Go to SFA to get new doffs and trade up doffs for betterones to sell.
-Go to the exchange to sell off Doffs I don't need.
-Buy Diplomtic Doffs as I'm working on Rank 4 diplomatic
-Start more diplomatic missions.
-Log off and go to bed, dreaming of the day I can transwarp to DS9.

Well, Manhattan's circumference is 31 miles. So, no, you won't see that. You won't see WoW sized continents without loadscreens either.
You could easily have something like the concept art with a city visible in the distance or a Mayberry sized chunk of city with more visible behind a wall IF there's time to produce that.
If it helps, look at something like Universal Studios theme park:
The extreme upper limit for a single STO map would probably be about the size of Grand Theft Auto 3's entire game world, if not a bit smaller.
That IS an engine limitation. But it's not a hard or permanent limitation. The Cryptic engine could be made to support bigger maps with changes in terms of rendering and such. They could make an offline game that supported much bigger worlds.
But consider, GTA3 is a whole game. And is a sandbox game in certain respects.
Making that for a 15 minute mission would be impractical. Making 40+ hours of content for one zone would be impractical.

Simple question: what do you do on a daily basis in STO? How many characters do you play, what missions do you do, etc.
Log-on, crash mere moments later.
Taskmaster, end STO.
Turn laptop off.
Turn laptop on.
Log onto STO, crash moments later.
Send ticket, if I get a response, asks the basic "Do you have XYZ updated? If so then try to uninstall" answer.
Post on forums, get smart alec responses or none at all that really help.
Gives up and continues to level characters on TOR even though I felt like playing STO at that moment .

That's probably about as big as it could get or a bit bigger.
Bigger than the sets or areas used as location shoots for Star Trek. But not as big as a fully city unless there are loadscreens.
