I'm excited too about the successful landing, but I don't think this is practical / Cryptic - PWE are allowed to use the likeness of NASA property.

You know Curiosity is a pretty big rover, right? It's literally the size of an SUV. ;)

If you want a rover pet, how bout the Soujourner Rover, which was seen on Enterprise?

    I agree with this here.

I wouldn't mind a mini-version of that on the ground, but yeah, I dunno how happy NASA would be with that.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

Guys at JPL are avid Star Trek fans, and I bet they would be thrilled if their rovers made it into STO. You wouldn't believe how nuts they went over the Star Trek Star Charts. :P

But I'm sure the ultimate decision lies ultimately with CBS with their approval, providing Cryptic / PW asks them.

With the Phoenix we already have a 'primitive' spacecraft, so there is somewhat of a precedent.

However, I can see two problems:

    1) Curiosity is big in the media now. Let's say development of the pet takes two month. Would it still be a major wanted item down the road, when the media coverage has decreased?

    2) Pandora's box: When we get a Mars rover, why not the space shuttle Enterprise, too? It has the name, could be a space pet and is canon. Like the ISS, numerous rockets seen in the shows... Where does it stop?

Personally, I think an Sojournerand Enterprise pet remain within reasonable confines. And concerning demand: If the Mars rover pet is a limited time award (like the Phoenix), it would be a boon to the rover fans and item collectors alike. :D

WOOT! I watched it live on the NASA channel. Almost snuck up on me. I remember the launch of the Curiosity, but didn't mark my calender for the rest of the trip :P

And +1 for the Sojourner ground pet! Totally fits my Sci captain!

Awesome, a true credit to the pioneering achievements of mankind. just a shame on the overly exorbitant price tag of making and sending it there though.

Alright, it'll be the size of a truck, can move 300 ft per hour, and there will be a 15 minute delay between you issuing an order, and it carrying that order out.

Why so accurate? Our Phoenix pet exceeds warp 1 when it follows me in sector space. :P

I was thinking that it should be more of a ground pet than a space pet.

Yes, a ground pet. I was just making a comparison with another low-tech pet (which happens to be a space pet).

As long as it isn't "one claim on one character" unlock, I am all for such a pet even if it had to be scaled down some, considering its actual size. However, I am done with anything that unlocks only once and for only one character. I will not support such greed anymore, I don't care if it was a Cheerleader and would save the World. I'm fed up with the Corporate Greed in the World and seeing STO go down that path just makes me more frustrated.

    I think not.

IMO, the Dev time required to make one, along with the fact that it's not a Star Trek asset, makes this a dicey proposition.

The model would be unique, unlike anything else currently existing in the game, with a very low reuse potential.

I'm also guessing that getting permission to use the likeness would be difficult at best.

Even though pretty much everybody wants to see the Vesta in the game, including the original designer, they still haven't nailed it down months after they said they were discussing it.

Nah, not really liking this idea to be honest. Just looking at it, I can see it could have a potentially high poly count, more so considering its large size.

What could be nice though, is a lounge on ESD (maybe bring back the old model of it that was removed) with pictures of famous space vehicles on the walls. Hell, add a museum somewhere in the game with a hall with pictures of famous space moments in history. It'd be far easier to make a picture on the wall of a room than to make a model of this rover and rig it to move properly.

Just to repeat: A canon alternative to the MSL Curiosity is Sojourner.

Also, the Phoenix pet hasn't been reused anywhere else so far. The Mirror Delta Flyer pet has the golden Terran markings, but the Terran NPC combat Delta Flyer looks standard issue.

My 2 cents: I'm a pet collector, so... However, I'm not sure whether the item is worth the effort (as has been stated above, there's little chance of reuse).
Suricata's wall idea is nice and could be tied to Fleet Starbases as limited time project furnishing but it's hard to rationalize having pretty pictures of Human spacecraft while the history of the 150 other planets is ignored (unless a reason is given.
