I for one hate some of the stupid names I've seen for ships. I've seen an IKS Fueled by Qaw Qaw. Really? Seriously? I've also seen a USS Male 4Male Lover. No. Just no. I name my ships after a broad range of things. My Defiant is Serenity, my Sovereign is Orion after the character from Chuck, and my Odyssey is Victoria for the Queen/BC CIty/Australian State. On my Science officer, I name ships after scientist characters, my Intrepid being Samantha Carter etc. My main KDF character I tried to go with warriors/honorable characters such as Lennier, Bra'tac, Teal'c, G'kar, and Ivanova. So when I see a name like USS Kitty Litter, or anything from My Little Pony, I have to fight the urge to stop what I'm doing, go rogue (if I'm on the FED side) and blast them from my sky.

Aaw, I love ships with ridiculous names. I named my Vo'Quv: "WeTurnForNobody" in honor of Spaceballs and the fact that the Vo'Quv turns like a [insert metaphor for something that moves in a straight line].
My Fed Engineer's cruisers ended up sharing names with Shuttles (Endeavour, Challenger, Discovery, etc), mostly because both have a tendency to be named for famous vessels of exploration.
My Fed Tac has spent most of his career in the Akira-class (now refitted to Armitage specs) USS Washington. I got it from a semi-canon list of Akira names on Memory Beta. As the dedication plaque reads: "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen."
With my Fed Sci, I tried to follow the class schemes of all her ships. Her Nova-class mini-Sov was USS Solstice, after the example of the Equinox; her Horizon-class was USS Moraine (significant boundaries like "Equator" or "Shoreline"; a moraine is the berm of earth pushed up at the front of a glacier). For an Intrepid ala Voyager, USS Dolphin (from another Memory Beta list, if I recall, almost certainly named for the research sub). And finally, the Luna-class USS Europa should need no explanation.
My Klingon Tac's ships were... colorful. His first command was the Quch'Hoh ("Joyful Murder" or something along those lines); when it was lost in a raid, he was given the Qul mI'wI ("Fire Dancer"). Then came "Blood Drinker"/"Drinker of Blood". He currently commands the Qin-class IKS Koloth, named (of course) for the legendary captain.
Finally, my Gorn Eng named his Freighter "S'yahazah", the Egg Bringer.

heh... when I get one of those ships I'll probably name it something that involves bricks... but not "IKS Brick Joke"... that'd be a bit much.
*sings* "I like Gammera! He's so neat!!! He is full of turtle meat!!!"
"Hah! You are doomed! You're only armed with that pathetic excuse for a musical instrument!!!" *the Savage Beast moments before Lonnehart the Bard used music to soothe him... then beat him to death with his Fat Lute*
The two ships I have that are presently seeing the highest usage are a defiant and scourge retrofit.
I named the defiant U.S.S. Chivalrous. It's from the school of naming that picks a quality that I hope the ship and her crew will embody. I wanted the name to tie in with other ships of the escort class like the Defiant and Valiant: Particularly the Valiant as I imagined Chivalrous being a 40 year old vessel that was intended as her sister ship. She's got some dents and a seen a few refits but she's a fighter.
The scourge is I.K.S. yIQongtaH. I'm reasonably confident I got the syntax right but it's meant as declaration to an enemy, "You sleep forever!". It's an allusion to impending death as a consequence of not being vigilant. Sadly the borg cubes in elite STFs don't seem to understand Klingon and one shot me with alarming frequency:(.
My fed science officer is still in command of her Intrepid. I went with U.S.S. Yuris as a nod to Enterprise and the vulcan doctor/researcher who took a stand for mind-melding vulcans. The medical bit was nice but a liked the idea of a touchstone for for vulcan civil rights.
