I couldn't care less about the Tholian ships. There's some nice stuff in the Lobi store, though. And I do have 15,000 Zen burning a hole in my computer pocket...

This will help immeasurably in preventing those unfortunate accidents of lockboxes slamming into neighboring ship hulls causing minor but unnecessary damage.
I'm not sure of how many lock boxes I've opened, but I got a Tuffli Freighter in one of the first ten I opened (Ferengi boxes). I got a mirror universe Star Cruiser and Assault Cruiser since then.
I've cracked about 20 of them open, using stipend cash, and dilithium converted to zen.
I got 6 or 7 Mirror cruisers that I put on the exchange (kept a Sovvie), and on the 8th lockbox, I got an Orb Weaver (and about 20 instant PM's from people with stupid, low-ball offers trying to scam me out of it...like 'hey 20m for Orb Weaver???').
I haven't had anything else drop, but I also ended up with enough Lobi crystals to get a Widow fighter, I got a few of the Warfare Specialists (one of which is great for space STF use), and I made a pile of EC's selling the Mirror ships on the exchange once I waited for them to go up to a few mil each.
I'll openly admit, I got lucky on the Orb Weaver, and it's a great ship; I really love it...but I think the Mirror cruisers drop pretty often, if you're just looking to get an interesting ship out of it.
I don't consider it a waste of time to open lockboxes, now that the average rewards aren't a total waste; worst-case scenario, I get 1 green and 3 white doffs out of it (the white ones of which can be dumped into a Fleet Starbase project), as well as some Lobi crystals, which really start to add up. If you run a lot of STF's, you should be getting at least 8,000 dilithium per day, per character; I'm refining 27,000 per day between 3 characters (8k, plus the 1k at the academy mission). At the dilithium exchange rates the past few days, I'm getting a key every day, so it's really not that bad.
Opened around 60 Boxes first day(all keys bought via exchange):
1 Orb Weaver, went to my wife the second it popped up (never even had the chance to say no),
about 10 Warfare Specialists (made up for their keys without hassle)
some Phased Boxes, opened all of them, one was very rare MKXII beam array with ACCx2 CritD, sold pretty quick
Rest was a mix of MU Ships, Fleet Pools (I guess 25% of it) and Mini Packs.
Was worthwhile, made enough EC back first day.
After that, I opened another ~50 during the days (2 here, 5 there), got me another Orb Weaver in the mix
Currently working on more Lobis to get a Recluse for my wife, and spend 150 for Tholian Ground Set.
After all I found me pretty lucky, except for Fleet Pools. I quiz out all blue pools in fleet day by day, used 2 purples for myself, and still have several. Due to the "buggy" exchange which didn't show them correctly for the majority I missed out on cashing in with them.
I opened 145. Didn't get an Orb Weaver. I went in expecting to get at least 1 by that point, so just decided to call it quits. I don't mind too much since I bought the master keys on the exchange back when they were 700-800k. If I had spent real money on those keys, I'm sure I wouldn't be so understanding.
I bought my galor, tuffli, recluse carrier, orb weaver tholian shuttle, vanity doffs, silk scarf, and consoles from the exchange. So my luck isn't that terrible.
I spent about $150.00 on keys ended up with enough crystals to get the recluse carrier, a bunch of doffs, tholian doffs, DS9 doff packs and 8 mirror ships, some nice phased weapons and those fleet credit booster thingys. two jump consoles as well.
Yesterday, failed Inspect Freighter AND Confiscate from Crew, both specked w/traits... I mean really, what are the odds of BOTH failing, at the SAME time....:eek:

My only time with the boxes was the first set (Christmas with Jem Hadar Fighter) and I only about maybe six and the rest were through the winter race. I have never bought a key, but did do the Doff packs. No luck with the second run on the bug ship, but did get a Tuffli on my second Doff pack.
Basically, I will chance it with Doff packs, but will never trust Cryptic/PWE's secret odds on the lockbox-buy a key sham game. :P
Lockbox wise, I have barely opened any to make it matter.
Stf's are a different matter. On my main fed toon, I get proto shield tech all the time yet I rarely get common or rare (not complaining about that). My main kdf has only got one space tech piece in about 40 stf's yet she gets a proto armor tech on my first ever elite ground stf. Drops are so weird in this game
mine's been pretty good. Ive gotten two mirror ships (one of each fed), two tholian purple doffs, and plenty of lobi crystals. the best lock box experience i've had so far, tbh.
I dont get why people are leaving this up to chance...on day one of the tholian lock boxes, by that evening I had both the recluse and the orb weaver. How? Selling keys.... I mean sure, you could pop that ship on key number 7 as I did with a D'kora a few months ago, or it could be 700. I spent the same $200 as you did and got both ships on day 1. At 1.7 mil per key (that was the key price on day1 of the tholian lockboxes), 135 mil for the ship, thats 79 keys, IT IS GUARANTEED..no worries, no doubts, selling keys works every time, no chance involved. $200 bucks is $200 bucks wether your selling keys or opening boxes. Sure $80 bucks is pretty high for a vanity ship i dont need, but I got it worry free and with out chance..or gambling if you will. If your going to throw more than a hundred dollars at the game, at least get what your paying for.
113 boxes opened, no ships, no awesome consoles. Just boosters, a few DOFF packs, and around 4 Lobi each. So much for Cryptic's 'new era of understanding.'

Haha yeah, my luck's pretty shocking. I've opened a number of boxes (unsure how many, but done with EC, Stipend and Dilithium Exchange) and some Reinforcement packs and never received anything 'rare' such as MK XII Tetryon Phased things, or lock box ships. I tend to grind my EC in order to buy the ships I want on the exchange.
In my first 14 levels since rejoining STO, I got just one Tholian lockbox. I did some of the free Zen promotions (with a throwaway e-mail address and plenty of anti-virus software) to get a single key.
My first and only box had a Mirror Universe Assault Cruiser. Jealous yet?
I think the game is now taunting me becaust between levels 14 and 15, I've gotten 10 more boxes... They taunt me, begging me to spend money to open them...

Concerning Lockboxes and their disposal:
Please be considerate when ejecting lockboxes around starbases and jump points. Post the following in Local or Zone chat before dumping your waste:
"Warning! Lockbox dump commencing! Stay Clear! Lockbox dump commencing!"

Is your ship decked out with purple XII consoles and purple XII [non-borg] weapons? That'll burn a hole in your pocket in no time.
