I had been away from sto for a few months, heard about the new season, thought i'd check it out.
i patched the game, went to log in, and was told that i either had to go to my email every time i log in, and put in a code, or i could let sto invade my computer, accessing who knows what, till it was satisfied that i was indeed myself. i immediately uninstalled sto. i don't actually think cryptic or perfect world has any nefarious plans for my info, it's that i think they are incompetent fools who can barely keep this game running, much less protect any sensitive data they have about their customers.
If and when i hear that they have removed this profoundly stupid security feature, i may be back, if not, was a nice game till they scared me away.
you seem to be overreacting to the security feature.
1) You can deactivate it by contacting billing.
2) unless you have some system that randomly changes your IP, you only have to do this once not every time. some people do have systems that change their IP so then you would have to re-enter it every time, in which case you may wish to turn it off.
3) it does not invade your computer at all or check any information other than your IP address which is not exactly sensitive data to your personal life. its not a date of birth, or age, or home address or anything personal.
It checks the the IP address of your computer that is being used to run the launcher is the same each time, to make sure its you. if it detects its being run on a computer that is not your IP, then it sends you an e-mail with a code to input to confirm its you. if you get an e-mail and you have not tried to log on using your normal computer (or for the first time) then its an early warning that someone has been trying to access your launcher on another computer. no one is getting any personal information out of it.
you don't have to let me go, i'm already gone. i do have a dynamic ip, like 90% of the cable modem user in the country, and they had the name of my computer on the patcher when i tried to log in, that is more than my ip adress. why do they need to know that? how many people do they have trying to hack their system daily to make something this intrusive necessary?

I didnt like this feature when it first launched and FYI it has nothing to do with Season 6
This was something that was introduced a few weeks back. I noticed it for the first time because I alternate computers in my home. I didnt want to have to put in the code each time, and thought that was very annoying to have to do that just because I decided to play on a different computer that I own.
So instead of coming to the forum and griping about it or terminating my subscription to STO and uninstalling it, I simply went in and turned it off.
Took 5 minutes, probably less than it would have to start a post about it in the first place.
It really seems like a small issue to leave the game over. If you have privacy concerns, contact PWE for more information regarding account guard. If this doesn't satisfy you, contact law enforcement. Data protection breaches are taken very seriously and often result in considerable fines if a company is found to be liable.

1) No, you can't. They will only tell you how to do it yourself, and you need the code to access the page where you can do it (the Create/Manage Subscriptions page).
2) It does not use your IP address. It checks your identity against your computer, as explained here. It likely uses your computer's MAC address, which is a unique ID each computer has.
3) See number 2. You are, however, correct about it not having access to personal data.
Except for your tinfoil hat. You can keep that. Wouldn't want you to not have your hat while you sit in your hardened bunker, wishing that there was something to do on your computer besides surf conspiracy sites.

Not as small as you may think. This is a response to the discovery that Cryptic's account security was breached. Unfortunately, the reality is most compromised accounts are due to a TRIBBLE e-mail addresses. As a result, Account Guard is actually inviting anyone who TRIBBLE my e-mail to also hack my STO account, whereas I would prefer that someone who TRIBBLE my e-mail was unaware of what games I have using that account.
Don't be mislead. This system is only to protect Cryptic/PWE from liability. It does nothing for you.

Such security features are an increasing trend. I cannot access my bank account anywhere except my registered computers, since my bank REQUIRES such account guard features.
So you can say that my bank is nefarious or incompetent as well.
It's inconvenient for me if I wanted to access my bank account or STO from an unregistered computer, say, at a friend's house or a hotel with Internet access.
The level of security and/or intrusion that you will tolerate is up to you. But I wouldn't go as far as you to insult or belittle Cryptic over it.

Hi ottomaddog,
You have to go to your e-mail, locate and enter the security code one single time, never again.
This is not to prevent STO from accessing your personal information but to allow you to be notified if any other player who is not you, attempts to hack or successfully logs into your account.
The new security feature provides a benefit to all STO players, there's no negative repercussions in any form, you have nothing to worry about, however it is still your choice to play, I hope you reconsider and reinstall.
You know i dont remember doing this. is there a way a can make sure this is set up on my account?
I have been TRIBBLE once. i dont need it happening again.
Log in (which is automatic after you've entered your details via the launcher), then log out and when you attempt to re-enter your details via in game you'll be notified of the e-mail that has been sent to you.

With all respect I must assume you did not go life by buying a came card at the store. I just mean you at least had or maybe still have a visa on file. You also know that this game is intergrated into your computer in ways you dont even know. Also this game is online.. Also you do know google tracks your searches and sites now.
I am not making funny im just saying from a former computer securty guy this is the least of your worries.

No. Dynamic IP does not mean that your IP address actually changes. It means that the cable company gives you a two week IP lease. At the end of two weeks, the lease is usually regiven with the exact same IP address. There is an option to change the address as needed, but rarely happens. I have a cable connection and my IP address hasn't changed in over two years.
Again, your computer name is not sensitive information. It's an identifier attached to your IP address so that humans can tell which computer is which. You're paranoid. Go buy a tinfoil hat and rant about RFID tags outside your local grocery store. This game won't miss you.
I'm going to close this thread now as "I quit" threads are closed to prevent trolling as well as other violations of the PWE community rules and policies, and this is a borderline "I quit" thread.
Note: Please refer to my first post in this thread for a response to the OP.

If he dislikes account-guard, he is gonna hate the game... Too many changes.

You can have it disabled... It's really easy... It's even easier to use it.
Theres nothing privacy about your computername... My computernames are katarina, Mina, Nina and Sahra...
Don't want it? get it disabled...
Don't want to disable? use it...
Don't want either of the above... Nothing we can do about it.

Here's some tinfoil build yourself a hat.
The cryptic account guard is near identical, if not entirely identical, to that which Steam uses.
Steam - Account Guard.

FYI Even MACs are not unique (and quite easy to change)
My guess is on the same information e.g. Microsoft uses to bind their Software to your PC.
Except for your tinfoil hat. You can keep that. Wouldn't want you to not have your hat while you sit in your hardened bunker, wishing that there was something to do on your computer besides surf conspiracy sites.
Not that you do that or anything.....

It was force implemented a few weeks ago...
The MAC address, unless you change it, is designed to be globally unique, as in only one computer has that ID (barring spoofing).
Log in (which is automatic after you've entered your details via the launcher), then log out and when you attempt to re-enter your details via in game you'll be notified of the e-mail that has been sent to you.
