Strange white hex pattern on ships

A few days ago I noticed that my character's ship, a Vor'cha battlecruiser took on a rather odd appearance. In places on the hull where there would normally be a color variant that could be customized there is now a strange white hex pattern. This started right after my character completed the Romulan missions. (not that I think that was the cause!)
I've noticed this same pattern on some other player's ships as well. I checked my graphics settings as well as the operational performance of both graphics cards and everything checks out. This is the only thing that appears to be affected. In the customization screen the ship looks normal, but in space it has the strange textures. I can provide a screenshot if that is permissible, but I was wondering if anybody has had this problem or is it a "feature" of the game?
I'm rather new to the game, but any advice would be helpful.

Did you by any chance receive and equip the experimental Reman shields?
