To Fleet Or Not To Fleet

xcadmanxxcadmanx Member Posts: 4 Arc User
Season Six looks like it will be a fantastic change for the Star Trek Online fleets. All the buzz and interviews I have been listening to have all been really positive.

However, I have never been a fleet player. I think fleets are great in general and are probably lots of fun but it has never been my thing or game play style. My fleet has always been the in game Star Fleet.......

I am concerned that I now will have to change the way I like to play in general to have the best gear and ships. I have been playing this way since launch date years ago. I enjoy playing singular. (Excluding STF)

With all the changes immanent...........

Will players who do not wish be part of fleets be given an alternate way or opportunity to
upgrade and get the best gear and ships as well? (Star Fleet already is our fleet)

For me STO has always been about giving options and to play how you want to play the game. I now feel like I am almost being forced to join a fleet or be severally disadvantaged in game.

We have always had the choice being.... to fleet or not to fleet.... however it looks like there will be no choice any longer.

I would like to encourage the DEVS to please consider an alternative way to getting some of this gear and ships in game for players such as myself. I know I am not alone with these thoughts.

I will say that many of the changes and ships coming to the game are an awesome enhancement to Star Trek Online. I am excited about this, even though I am not in a fleet, but am deeply sorrowed that this will only be made available for players in fleets and not for everyone as it should be. In a way we all are in a Fleet called Star Fleet.

To be honest, I have been in the same boat until recently. The issue has been that unless you were into PvP or STF's, there really is nothing to do in a fleet except for socialising. Fleet Starbases give fleet members real goals and objectives to work towards.

I really love the choices this game gives you. Enforcing membership in a fleet in order to get goodies, to me, represents a loss of the scope of choices one can make.

    That's a little sad.

Ive run a small fleet for almost the entire run of STO we have lotsa fun and dont demand much from our members, you can find similar fleets for your team up needs OR start your own "1 man fleet" as has been mentioned in the dev postings. though i agree you should not have to be in a fleet, this issue has been addressed and beaten to death.

The one-man-fleet thing is probably too expensive to be practical though. How many players are sitting on a cache of a couple million dilithium? Maybe just make an antisocial fleet. "We're a collection people who don't actually like other people. But we do like ships."

You're not alone in your thoughts on this.

I have been in a couple of fleets in my time on STO, one was a "we got 100s of members, join us" and they barely had any active players and the other was an active fleet but never I felt like anything more than a cog in someone elses machine.

The one thing I found to date was that a good friends list was as good as any fleet and I have a couple of close friends who share a fleet, may only be a few of us but perhaps you and some friends could pool together. May not be much but better than one man fleet but it skips the drama of the large fleets and their politics and drama and perhaps the ego of overbearing fleet leaders I have encountered.

I've been thinking of making a fleet just like this... thinking of calling it

I've noticed Cryptic has been silent on this subject for a while. I remember Mr. Stahl mentioned months ago they had some kind of solution in mind for not leaving solo players out in the cold, but it seems they decided to not do anything for people not interested in fleets.

Perhaps some clarification is in order?

Amusing, and been having the same thought. Would probably give it something more bland though, like "111th Squadron" (as in a couple of ones) so its nice and bland when floating over someone's ID. Seen more than a few fleet names out there where I have to wonder "you intentionally called yourself that?"

I run a small fleet with my wife and a close friend, we are also concerned as it's really only a fleet of 3 as very few others have committed to the fleet in terms of saving up for bank slots and such.

Unfortunately in this game it doesn't work out as intended. I was in a fleet on the KDF side for a while but they were so against Federation players that I was forced to leave. I am a KDF player first but do like to mix it up at times a play a Feddy.

I think Cryptic hasn't count on many people having bad experiences either with fleets. Not to sound like a advertisement but if anyone wants a hand, perhaps join a small fleet of friends feel free to contact me. I'm an Australian but we also have people from several different countries spanning from the old Star Trek Armada Community too.

The systems idea is, that every fleet can achieve everything, it only costs time.
3 peeps going all out crazy grind will be faster than 20 people going "Nay, won't give anything, you owe me, because I'm in your stupid fleet."

That said, I might be interested in a fleet, will pay my share, but due to my odd playtimes, I might be not that great of a socializer ;)

I always thought a better idea (and one to revitalize PvP in this game) would be to have PvP credits instead of "Fleet Credits", where you earn a small base amount just for participating and a much heftier chunk for dealing damage, healing, assists, kills, etc.

In my mind that should've been the way to earn +1 ship requisitions, with the starbase bonuses simply being new ship skins (which I think is what a lot of us were originally expecting them to be, not a whole power tier of ships).

Hmm, what about a solo fleet? No TS/Vent, no fleet chat, no fleet bank., ... absolutely nothing aside from everybody can contribute to the fleet starbase and gets the benefits?

    Just an idea...

Yeah, I've been in the same boat too, so I started a fleet in preparation for S6.

Currently sitting on a stack of over 3 million dilithium, send me a mail @DudeBGuy if you feel like being a co-investor.

A public pseudo fleet(s) created by Cryptic? That might work.

To fleet, or not to fleet, that is the question:
Whether 'tis Nobler in the mind to enjoy
The daily Grinding for Loot and Dilithium,
Or to join ranks with similar minds for fun.

You have more to gain from joining a fleet than you risk losing.
Worst case scenario you can always quit the fleet.

Here's what I'm looking for in a fleet. I want to join a casual fleet, but they have to be large enough to be socially active.

However, I don't have a mic, so mandatory use of Teamspeak or Vent or any other verbal communication is a no go.
They also must be an English speaking fleet, and their fleet name needs to be creative. Not "147th Starfleet Elite Tactical Defense Squad" or any other military-themed names. That's what I'm looking for. I know that's being really picky, but I know there's someone out there who fits all those qualifications.

Its cute at first, but then realize you're walking around everywhere in the game with that floating over your head all the time. Its like names that are cute when a kid is 3, but really suck to have at 15.

    Such as:
    • Drama
    • Politics
    • Backstabbing
    • Stuff vanishing from the fleet bank

    Yup. Definitely more to gain.

The Contribute button for projects is now disabled if a player doesn?t have contribution permissions.

Fleet were just turned into dictatorships/bureaucracy on tribble now. What a great news...

*shameless promotion begins* The "Knights That Say Ni" is Always recruiting, casual, social, helpful to each other players, who can take a good joke or ribbing and give it back. We do casual Play, RP, Hang out at the Awesome Subspace-Radio Parties. STF run etc. My command chain is very loose and we are working on how to figure out crafting the new ships when they release, To my knowledge not everyone can craft them at once. The starbase has to craft them one at a time (unless it changed) All i ask is you help each other if you need it, otherwise have a bloody good time! I just have one simple Rule, don't go bashing on members due to race, religon, sexual preferance and all the other typical hateful things. Unless done in a playful and not hatemongering way! We're all here to have fun! *shameless promotion Ends*

Public fleet controled by Cryptic! Perfect idea, they could even call them STARFLEET, and the Klingon Deep Space fleet!
Wish I could think of something wise and cool, and all That!

For those that want to have a 1 person fleet, the question has been, how do I get enough Marks for the projects. The problem is that the Fleet event requires a team of players.

However, the new "Officer on the Watch" daily is on Tribble and grants 5 Marks (the task was to check some lockers, count the equipment, and enter the qty on another console). Using 5 character alts you could save 25 per day for projects. A project that requires 300 Marks would take 2 weeks to save up enough marks.

There are also the new fleet themed missions/events that pop up in the public PVE queue. Most of them only require you to be in an fleet of some kind (at least one of them doesn't even require fleet membership).

edit for Cryptic quote from Tribble thread:
Solo players can earn fleet marks in a variety of ways. If you are referring to solo and by yourself the only current way planned is to run a starbase daily. These have not been released yet but it will be a fast way for a single player to earn a small amount of Fleet Marks. I'm not sure if the conversion system made it in before Heretic left, but I knew it was in discussion.

Now, as a solo player you can join any queue and play the fleet content with a random team to earn fleet marks as well, though I don't know if that's what youre after. This way is just as viable as playing only with fleeties.

I'd be willing to join a fleet in-game, but I don't play daily. I'm generally online 1-2 times per week for 2-3 hours tops. More then likely, most fleets want more active players. I've gotten several random invites in-game, but decline them.

As a life-time subscriber since the game launched, I don't feel the need to be online several hours per day. And with Guild Wars 2 coming out, my time will be taken up there mostly.

Enjoy Star Trek Online, but to me, it's more of a casual game now. Never been a huge fan of worrying about having the latest, greatest gear, etc. Play to have fun more then anything.
