Just wanted to say thanks for the PvP matches.

Sorry about the cursing, flailing at the keyboard and general frenzied bouts I am known to get into. (I'm a child trapped in the body of a 41-yr old!)

But seriously,

1.) Most arenas I get slaughter in regularly. In the beginning I bemoaned the premades, saying terrible things about them. So, I started asking around for help. People like Mav and tons of people on OPvP were there to lend advice and support.

2.) The best advice I got though was the quick turnaround handed out to me by a premade from Sad Pandas recently. I was simply obliterated. Period. I have seen an outcry over the stacking of certain skills, and just wanted to say that while I was dying, the only thought that when through my mind was (besides my dignity and feeling emasculated), "how do they do that", and "what I would give to do that."

3.) Mav, Horizon and other, you may like to know I started my own PvP fleet, D.F.A. We are still young, but someday soon, we will be there and perhaps just give you guys a run for your money.

4.) At the end of all this, I suddenly felt invigorated with PvP. It became something meaningful again. Every player, and opponent a story and a strategy. I use to run just a single build with one type of weapon and shield, etc. Now I carry three so I can readily swap out.

So, Cryptic. If you are planning to change anything, I would like to quote a Roman senator if I may, "All roads lead to Rome." In this case, everything we do in STO is a build-up towards playing against and with one another. Please treat that fairly and also respect that just because there are virtuosos of the arena, does not mean that the mechanics are broken or being exploited.
As much as I hate to say it, it sux dying, but some of these guys make it look like watching an Olympic athlete.

Hey DK, congrats on the founding of your fleet. I remember the joy I felt fielding my first few teams in the ques.

I'm kind of between teams right now, debating within myself of either trying again to take the ques. Or going to an existing premade fleet and finding a home there.

I appreciate your gratitude. It's the knowledge that people like you read our stuff, and learn from us that keep me going in this game and keep me posting.

Like I said, Mav you reached across the divide when I was wrong, and this all started from there. Remember how I used to berate premades. How very wrong and naive of me. It's the only way to get 120% enjoyment from PvP.

If there are any new players getting into PvP for the first time, thinking "holy ...", read anything Mav has posted on builds. This is a player that is constantly experimenting with builds and stuff. In a past life, I swear, he was either a mathematician or an inventor!

My PVP experience has run the spectrum from winning (top damage dealer/top kills) to getting outright humiliated...

I do have a question for the PVP community... I understand that the difference in build between PVE (where I play most often) and PVP can be significant... but honestly, taking my build in (consistently in top 2 of damage dealt in PVE) into a PVP match and getting utterly desimated seems odd.

I've all but given up PVP (especially in the queues) I played 5 matches yesterday... and in each I felt like a LT 10 up against VA 50's.

What are some tips to improve the consistency of the PVP experience.

Dont get me wrong by the way... When I am waiting for my respawn timer, I am genuinely impressed with the skill of the, what I hope are experienced PVP teams. I dont cry foul, or exploit, or hack.... i accept my death... but would like to.... well die less often.

What are your top 5 PVP tips?

Tops 5 Tips from a person still learning:

    1) Your Build, in the end, is only as good as the team it's on.

    2) Teamspeak or Ventrilo. Communication is 50% or more of PVP

    3) Dedicated target caller who understands prime targets, reading buffs, etc. (target switcher)

    4) Cross healing = big ups. Heal the primary healer too, it's very much appreciated lol.

    5) You won't win all the time, sometimes you run a balanced team (2 engi healer, tac, sci or tac sci sci, engi, etc) but run into another premi that's all sci with snb. *shrugs* all part of getting your knocks I suppose. You can't account from every type of team you run into, but you can def learn and have some fun while you do it.

You said 5, but biggest tip is have fun, enjoy your company/team/family, ask questions, and keep at it. :)

    I'm new too so please do not quote me on this {Looks around nervously}

1.) Get TS, and learn to communicate with your team. Or simply, use this keybind (type it in zone chat when you are in space): /bind [..key here...] Team Target [ $Target ] does the trick.

2.) Don't go it alone. Make sure that you have support.

3.) Early defense is better than late defense. Cycle your powers constantly.

4.) Situational Awareness. Watch your mini-map. Listen out for the APA and powers trigger near you, and prepare for blow.

5.) Play your build for its role.

If you do come across a player that consistently annihilates you, after the match drop them a "Howdy, wuz up!" You'd be surprised how helpful they can be.

#1, EPTS. (emergency power to shields 1 and 2 preferably) You need it.

#2, always balance your shields, even when tac team is up. I heartily recommend putting Distribute Shields on a key that you can easily hit at all times.

#3 be ready to switch power levels. I always keep at minimum 2 power setting presets handy.

#4, stop by the new escort, and the ultimate cruiser 2.0 threads, for not just learning about those respective ships but other things as well like Duty Officers, skill specs, etc.
    I'll fetch you the links.

But the others seem to lean towards playing on set/premade teams... which I do not have... so is the general concensus that the joining the queue solo is not the best way to experience pvp?

Cant imagine starting each PVP match with throwing out the Vent info, deciding who is lead... and everyone on before the other team has waltzed over and pummeled us.

I have a vent server that doesnt see much use (seeing that PVE really doesnt require a lot of communications) except while training...

I would find it most helpful if there were a way to target Non-NPC players... there are times that the soup is so thick with pets that I can't find the Real Player....

    Any suggestions?

    Yes, Yes, Yes!

I use the following bound to the "b" key:

    /bind b "GenSendMessage HUD_Root FirePhasers $$ +power_exec Distribute_Shields"

So, the effect is that everytime I fire my weapons the shield auto-distribute :)

Go to options and disable targeting pets. Also, FAW, TS, FBP, etc will still target they irrespectively of this option.

I believe under HUD options or somewhere about, you can also deactivate the label of the NPC, so you cannot see thousands of labels floating around. But, in PvE remember to turn it on again!

Well you bring up an interesting perspective I hadn't considered. I tend to shy away from kirk mentality. I suppose though, you could use the following keybinds to perhaps 'aid' a pug team somewhat (primary reason why I became a healer).

at the start of most pug matches I toss this out.

---> /bind t team Focus Fire, Stay Together 10km, don't rush, Heal each other, GL ^_^

so when I hit 't', that automatically tells the team what I expect.

assume that no one else is taking lead and calling targets. take it upon yourself unless someone else does after.

    -->/bind c team Target: $target?

you can replace 't' or 'c' with whatever you want, but when you put that into chat, make sure to delete and retype the quotation marks so the work properly.

maybe fly with at least one friend in the same boat as you so you have someone to do some teamwork with :), sometimes there are people in pugs that are all about that.

It's not the best way, no, but it is still a way and it can be fun if you meet good Premades or "just" PuGs. Sometimes, unfortunately, being a Premade is not that fun either - if the enemies available are only uncoordinated PuGs with unexperienced players, you won't have all that much fun either. Best chance then is probably to go out and do some teaching (and I don'T mean that as an euphenism for blowing them up 15 times in a row).
Cant imagine starting each PVP match with throwing out the Vent info, deciding who is lead... and everyone on before the other team has waltzed over and pummeled us.
I find Team Speak or Vent kinda inconvenient, since I must wear my headset and stuff, so I try to avoid it. I think for the average queue participation, just having some target call command keybinds or something like that can be enough.

In a Premade vs Premade setup, voice communication is great if not necessary. Also, if you join a fleet of friends, you may find it just fun to talk to them. And you make a lot of friends in PvP. (Weird, right, shooting other players makes you more friends than shooting NPCs together, at least that's my experience).

On a lighter note there is a CRITICALLY IMPORTANT MUST HAVE Keybind under all circumstances:

/bind t Team "please leave darky alone, he is slower than the rest of us, and is prone to peeing."

Yours puts out more power than mine did with the original engine...
5.0L V8, 139 KW this is at 3000 RPM 379.63 NM. This is at 1800 RPM
Course mines original engine is... 26 years old  however what I'm putting in...

    Thing going in?

    6.6L Diesel Turbo V8 (Duramax)
220 kW (this is at 3,100 RPM) 705 N?m (this is at 1800 RPM) With room to easily be modified to put up to about 3x the KW, and NM

Needless to say the poor camaro is going to have to get all sorts of modifications just to keep from tearing itself to pieces from the sheer torque.
