Man, you start off with a BoP that has many options for changing the looks and so forth and then you downgrade when you level up to a ship that you have virtually no control over how it looks.
by the by, I think that Cryptic could solve this problem easily.
Since the BoP(and this goes for other klink ships as well) is typically easily recognizable , then why not make it so that as you level up, you don't get one ship design that you are stuck with, but you get a bonus ship design to the one you already have? Obviously, this doesn't make sense with fed ships, since all their ships are so varied from tier to tier, but with klinks, you might actually be able to get away with this.
So, how about it? Excluding the B-Rel design (since it's in C-Store at end-game), you could have total customization in the Klingon faction without having to do too much work for it!
Welcome to the Klingon faction, the stepchild of Star Trek Online and the mistreated faction of the game.
I go so far as calling the game Federation / Starfleet Online after the last Dev post concerning faction development. Every future faction will have a fraction of the content the Federation has.
I've only just started playing a Klingon character after leveling two Starfleet officers so I haven't gotten to the point where I'm ready to grumble. However, as a mostly Starfleet player, I can imagine that the majority of Star Trek fans desire to play that faction because of the ethos of Star Trek: Exploration, Prime Directive, Helping others, etc. I know that I am that way for the most part. However, I thought I'd take a walk on the wild side as a Klingon and see what I was missing.
I'm currently at the tail end of a Lieutenant character and so far it's enjoyable to be wicked and blow up Federation forces or shoot them down like dogs on ground missions. However, there isn't a whole lot that feels different yet than when I was grinding up a Starfleet character -- other than fewer story based missions. I think the developers will add more and more content to the Klingon side but I imagine thar from a business angle, they have to concentrate on the majority of players rather than the more specialized ones.
I don't know what this will mean when the Romulans come on board as a playable faction -- will they merely be another version of Klingons with lesser quality gameplay or will they fix the mistake they made and add more content, hopefully using that to fix the Klingon side as well.
The Lieutenant levels don't show much of the Klingon misery as a character starts at level 6 and levels pretty fast through the clusters.
Cryptic failed to deliver on the promises of 2 patches which should have brought the Klingons on par with the Federation: 1st shortly after release and then Season 2. They only added the exploration clusters, 8 missions and bugged to hell fleet actions. Not really on par with the Federation side as they got even more goodies and content in the mean time.
It' s easy what Cryptic tries, we Klingons shall pay for content while the Feds will get it for free.
My self-induced "niceness" keps me from commenting on this situation. While I can ssay that the KDF has recieved alot of new "life" to the faction, this is one thing we are still waiting on.

That's just plain not true. 66% of the C-store is Fed exclusive. 18% is KDF exclusive, 38% of that is bridge packs (the other 16% is neutral stuff like account services). So Feds are the ones really paying for their extra content.

And there are still many Fed players how want to take away every unique thing we Klingons have and add it to their Federation side.
The Devs buckled and gave in to the whiners
Worst of all we are expected to use the Foundry for new missions while the Feds will get them directly from Cryptic.
