Ah, ok. I see the connection to the Foundry now and you can maybe do this in the context of the one mission. But I still don't understand why, at the end of the day, you'd want to end up with a lower rank?
Interesting idea. Thing is, you won't see a feature like this unless the devs have done it before in their episodes. Once an episode starts you play at the same level for the entire episode.
The closest you'll be able to come is a two-parter where you set different levels for each mission.
In Part 1, you play at VA Level but you disobey Starfleet which results in a court-martial. In Part 2, you play at Captain Level because you've been busted own a rank.
And this is only if Cryptic allows us to set the level of our missions. NCSoft did it with Mission Architect so I don't see why not.
I'm not trying to be rude and all...but this would really be a pointless ability. Change your pips, change your title to Captain, they've already said they're working on tech to allow NPCs to call you by the title you choose...so...what would be the point? Absolutely nothing changes except your title, which you can do already.
I'm sure you can make a mission to rp out the change already, why waste further dev time?
Edit: Further complications would be the ships you have access to are dependent upon your rank, not your actual level. Would you really want to be the only level 51 in Starfleet that only has access to t4 grade ships and effectively cripple yourself in pvp / harder pve content?
Any sort of user generated system that has the ability to permanently change any part of a character's status will a vector for abuse and griefing.
I think to Modern Warfare 2 in particular in which players could randomly join a modded server and be instantly made max level and receive all weapon unlocks without their consent, or the players that get deleveled all the way down to level 1 when they kill certain people. I know what you're proposing isn't that extreme, but I felt the need to provide a worst case scenario example.
I know it isn't quite the same thing, but wouldn't phrasing the dialog in your episodes work just as well? The only difference is what is displayed in the top left corner of UI, and I believe you can hide it if you really feel that it is that much of an immersion breaker.
I have a thought for an episode that is completly different from what exists allready, a mission that is taken by choice, and you do not have to participate. But if your initial reaction is to critizie others peoples plot ideas, then I sincerly hope that you are not invited to participate in the beta phase because you obviously have nothing positive to contribute.
Actually I like the idea, it's certainly a large variation from the constant trudge forward. I'd love to hear what other angles you planned on takig this(story wise). But yeah I mean thats straight from the Kirk era! and I am certainly intersted in trying a misson(s) like that and see if i enjoy it.

Wait! I thought Modern Warfare 2 didn't allow modded servers?
People breaking the rules and spirit of a game for entertainment and griefing? Say it ain't so!
no lets make a creative thread or something for "helpful" criticism only, not everyone want to tear things apart. I certainly have hoped that some of us could rubb ideas with each other. Feedback to my ideas..(for me) is a HUGE HUGE tool that is so important to the final product and future products. When I was making videos full time I had a select group of people(all with different tastes" to critique my videos so i could make them better.
Maybe the devs could help us protect such a thread?
Dont stop! I know how you feel I have been in that place, but you just need to find out who the people are that can see past a small idea and understand it is a potential for something bigger that basically: you have to start somewhere. Meaning no idea is to small or "stupiid".
Please dont stop I want to "work" with people who aren't araid to share ideas in public.
Nobody is trying to be mean or tell the OP here to not show any further ideas. Its just that what he wants you can do already, and with the tech that allows NPCs to call you by a chosen title, it just makes this one particular idea moot.
I mean I know the idea of being the Captain and following in Kirk's footsteps sounds all nice and romantic and awesome and all...but in a game where rank has no meaning beyond what ships you have access too, and you can RP out what he wants anyway...why bother coding something like this in?
I wish there would be an option to actually make what you do have consequences on your character.
For instance you kill the delegation in a first contact mission and you get punished, you broker peace between two enemy faction and you get rewarded.
We've seen missions already in the game who have had dialogue that have given us the impression that it would have consequences on which road we decided to travel, but they didn't.

yeah me too, right from the beta of this game I always hoped to see consequences of indivuals actions down the line creating various paths/stories/reactions. I remember too also wanting : 2000 players do a quest..that involves the political canon of the game. the highest percentage of players actions(say %68 of players chose "option B" ) would have an effect on the evolviing plot of the game as a whole and mission developement and all that comes with it would be affected or "bent" as a result of mass player activity. it sounds complicated..but really the quests would just feed a database that would then be used by the devs when making certain missions/sectors/storylines.
Still something that some peeps may not realise..in creation(programming springs to mind) it's often not about the amount of features you have in your toolset. But instead it's about taking that toolset and doing things and emulating thnings and creating tools or misdirecting people enoug to make things happen that were not intended or provided for in the original tooleset. It's not just the creation of story...it's using the tools you are given in a creative way...hell might even give the devs a suprise :P
I dont see a reaosn why in some smaller scale we cant cant evolve or create certain stories over time with the foundary..even if it is a well made illusion..

I don't understand why this would appeal to people?
I would have thought this'd belong on one of the more general discussion boards?
