So throughout history when two culutres have clahsed in prolonged wars there has always been the possibility of traitors and defectors. Benedict Arnold is just one example. So I was wondering if there would ever be the chance for one of our STO characters to defect to the other side? I ask because it would be cool and interesting. I thought enough about it to propose a few rules.
1) Only ever happen once per character
2) Only applicable to Captains and above
3) 1 month real time block to being able to play your character (represents time being intterogated)
4) Loose your ship until criteria 5 is met
5) Reduced in rank two levels, must achieve your original rank again before you can get your ship back
6) Enemies of the faction your defected from preferentially target you in all future combat
7) You loose all energy credits you had
8) Barred from joining any fleet until you have ahchieved one promotion
Yes these rules are harsh. They are meant to be so that this is not abused.
I like it, but I agree with the above poster. The month layover is a little excessive. There are other penalties to insure lack of abuse, such as the energy credit loss, loss of all merits, loss of bridge officers, etc. It would basically be starting over with the other side with only a slight reduction in rank.
Take Klingons. There are Federation Klingons and Klingon Klingons. And even though they inherited all the same traits like face tattoos and headgear (ie. when eyepatches come, they'll come for both) and issues using Tribbles, they are separate races in the game code. Same with Joined Trills.
I don't think there's much Trek precedent for it either.
Now... I could see a new faction that you can defect TO, maybe, or the opportunity for enhanced cross faction play. (Example: a race that has a trait which keeps it from being hostile to anyone and can team with the opposite faction.)
But permanent defections...? That's more complicated than trait respecs and we don't have those either.
Klingons would level up on the Fed side because of the little content they have then go back. I'm not sure that's really a good idea with the current state of the game.
Plus how would it work out down the road with other factions?

I think you're right - defectors don't appear that much in Trek. I don't think they appeared at all in TOS, VOY, or ENT.
There was the Romulan in the TNG episode "The Defector," though the title character, Admiral Jarok, doesn't consider himself such, and even Picard states that the idea of a Romulan defector was a contridiction in terms. I think "Face of the Enemy" is the most prominent examples of any sort of defectors; and again it involved Romulans. The first was actually human, Stefan DeSeve, who defected to the Romulans some years before the events in the episode before he defected back to the Federation due to his disillusionment with the Romulan system. The other was Vice-Proconsul M'Ret and his aides, who was apparently escaping arrest by his government for speaking against it.
In DS9, the most prominent defector to my mind was Weyoun 6, who tried to defect to the Federation through Odo but sacrificed himself to save Odo's life before they could reach safety.

It will also be meaningless as almost all future content planned is faction agnostic, with each faction getting a few flavor missions.
My gut says that by the time Romulans launch, they'll have a full PvE leveling path but it will almost entirely be missions that can be played by any faction, with a few faction specific ones for flavor.
And with the talk about opening more of space to Klingons, my guess is that a lot of existing Federation missions will become faction agnostic in the future to support that system.
I CAN see infiltration as a mechanic in the future and if you want to roleplay being a defector, you can, but you'll still transwarp back to your own side's starbase and revert to your true colors in PvP and be unable to join an opposing faction fleet.

Other wise, defectors are extremely rare in Trek.
While this may have been true STO has set prescendent for it. How else is there playable Klingons on the Fed side? Because groups if not entire houses of Klingons chose to side with Federation in this recent Klingon-Fed war. They have in fact already defected. My idea is a simply extension of that.
On another point perhaps a month is to long of a time.

Because Worf and B'Lanna were Starfleet officers. Though I get your point in regards to game mechanics.
Although I see where this is going, I also have to admit that having Starfleet Klingons can be used as defectors since you can make Klingons as a fed and become a captain.
Beside, I think if a Klingon would defect, he wouldnt be able to get another Klingon vessels and would be stuck with whatever ship he/she ahd when they defected and would need to buy feds ship after a while.

I just think this is one of those items that can work, just not yet with the way the game stands right now. The devs need to make some fixes first then this idea would be a bit better for the game.
And this idea is not even new to MMO's either... and the game Cryptic started out with, Paragon Studios is about to release something just like this idea called Going Rogue.
I just think thiis would add some interesting gameplay choices. It would fun and not outside the realm of possibilities since there are in game, in canon, and real world examples of this happening.
I am very sorry to cut off a conversation, but unfortunately this is a necro thread and I have to close it.
