I've gotten a few comments on my Assault Cruiser name, positive comments at that. It's Sovereign and I wanted to go with something along the Enterprise name but I see so many ships with variations on that I had to think creatively. In the end I came up with..........
I'm sorry, are we still talking about awesome starship names in this thread?
'Cause, y'know, there's a completely separate thread for absolutely f*cking terrible or incredibly stupid starship names. You all need to go over there.
Please note that there has never been a USS Nixon in the US Navy. Gee, I wonder why.
Well there was a USS Zhukov and USS Zapata, so seeing a USS Nixon wouldn't be all that impossible. Nixon was a paranoid jerk, but he did open up US relations with China, led the first major disarmament conferences between the US and Soviet Union, worked toward desegregation across the country, and worked toward peace policies in the Mideast that virtually expelled the USSR's influences in the region, all of which may cause the UFP of the 25th century to look somewhat differently on him.

Yes but Nixon is still a last name...
So if Starfleet had an officer by the named of Nixon who has done great things, won a decisive battle they wouldn't name a starship after him because of someone else who lived 300-500 years before he did?

Yep.
Everyone's heard of the bad one.
Nobody's heard of the good one.
So even though the good one deserves such an honor, he won't receive it, 'cause everyone and their brother will associate the name with the bad one.
Is Nxion even remembered in the 25th century? Does the public still have strong feelings about Andrew Johnson? Lets say a famous and loved Johnson died are we barred from naming a ship the USS Johnson?
Keep in mind, I'm not saying it's an awesome name, but it's still a valid name and far from a bad name. Now had it been the USS Richard Nixon....

Helped a buddy of mine while he was on his 10 day trial come up with a name. We went over at least five or six nautical name sites and eventually on a sprawling list he found "Kiss My Aft" probably the best I seen.
Though I do like my Engineer's ship's name of Doolittle. personal hero of mine and I don't mean no doctor.

Escort is USS Naginata, continuing the tradition of naming those types of ships after weapons (stock ones are Rapier, Saber, and Ushaan)
Cruiser is USS Cu Chulainn
-U.S.S Absolom (cruiser- named after an existing Danish fregat, i just like that name)
