Ok, played up to RA and while I really enjoyed the graphics and mechanics of the ground combat. Many of the environments are very well done as well. There is actually quite a bit of variety you can set up with different skills, exposes and exploits and whatnot which seems to have a good deal of potential.
That being said there is almost zero challenge once you pass Leuitenant. I've had the same 4 BOs on my away team, 2 Tac, 1 science, 1 engineer. I found out early on that as long as you have 1 health regen and 1 shield regen tallent in your party and equip the common grade shields and armor as they drop along the way you're pretty much invincible.
I think I may have been incapacitated in PvE ground combat maybe half a dozen times, usually when I've been goofing around, and half of those times the rest of my team won the battle even w/o reviving me.
Through the Captain levels I would pull 2 or 3 True Way squads at a time just to keep it interesting and I still never felt in danger of losing the fight. The only annoying opponents are some of the mirror engineers that regen their shields repeatedly because I got rid of all my debuff abilities in favor of offensive ones because the only real challenge I found was trying to get the fight over quicker.
There seems to be quite a bit of potential in the overall system but especially considering there are no death penalties every mission is a complete breeze.
Some suggestions:
Enemies use buffs and debuffs much more aggressively requiring actual investment in science/engineer skills.
Enemies use exposes.
Enemies aggressively flank or charge requiring some form of crowed control.
Enemies focus fire.
Defensive regeneration reduced.
Some non-difficulty based items that could use some work as well:
Teammates choosing skills with better AI. (E.G. Tac officers never use lunge unless ordered. Engineers refabricate their turrets/generators as soon as the CD is up instead of when the original one fades. Teammates never move to shield/health generators.)
Actually pretty much the AI choices are the only big issue when it comes to my away team annoying the hell out of me.
Anywho, that's been my experience leveling up and I'm looking forward to future encounters where I feel there is an actual possibility that I might have to try to succeed.
Tho I haven't yet worked out a good solo tactic against some of the Psi Trained Rommie/Reman Elite Shadow Guard...with their nasty life drain ability....that completely ignores your shields and sucks you dead in no time.
