I was wondering if anyone had put together any grouping strategy guides.
If not, would anyone like to try?
What i would like to know is:
What role(s) does each group member play?
For each role, what powers, skills, ship class, etc are best?
How does that role help other members fulfill their role?
It seems like alot of people are assuming the healer-dps-tank trinity, but their are same game mechanics missing for that to be complete (although still possible). I know alot of people want to steer STO away from that model though. I'm hoping someone can come up with something new and interesting that will satisfy both groups.
STO has a very strange dynamic that doesn't quite fit the natural trinity of MMOs. I've started a thread with the intent of constructive criticism for this very purpose. The end game content isn't released yet so it's all speculation.
Nothing in the game yet is difficult enough to merit this type of strategy unless you are trying to 5 man a fleet action, whcih I've tested this on and it's worked out well with slightly different ship types. But tell me what you think. I've been testing it as best I can.
I'm going to rephrase your idea. Let me know if i got anything wrong:
You have 4 roles: Primary target tank(PT), Multi-target Tank (MT), Healer, and DPS.
The PTs job is to engage and draw agro from the primary target. His job is to use what ever means possible to keep that target attacking him, leaving the DPS guys free to unload. The PT must be a cruiser, but ideally is an assault cruiser captained by a tactical officer. I'm wondering if an escort captained by an engineer would be good here.
The MTs job is to engage and draw agro from all other targets. His job is to keep all other targets from attacking any other ships in the group. The MT must be a cruiser, but ideally is a starcruiser captained by an engineer.
The healer's primary job is to keep memebers alive. I'm guessing he/she has a secondary job of buffing and/or debuffing and DPS. The healer is ideally a science vessel, but a cruiser may work too.
DPS should lay down as much damage as they can without drawing agro from the PT. Ideally you would have escorts fill this role, but could be filled by any ship type (although science would also be buffing / debuffing instead of strictly DPS).
