What should I play?

I played a Tactical / Escort in beta. Absolutely loved the ground combat for Tactical, and Escort is definitely my thing.

However, I'm interested in trying another class. I'm a very offensive player and particularly like the stealth/Operative Kit for Tactical Officers. As someone that likes to rush into the thick of things and kick butt, what else would be good for me? I'd love kit suggestions as well. Both ground and space suggestions.

I love ground PvP. Space is alright.

go science; meet interesting players, make their replicators dispence only lukewarm carrot juice and shoot their own side in despair. :)

Are you just sayin' that, or do you really think based on my interests I would enjoy Science? ;p

If you're heavy into the offensive side of things, then engineering and science would definitely NOT be for you. They are support roles.

Even cruisers and science vessels are set up for support, so it really depends.

If you like fast paced space battles, then your only option is a escort. If you can handle a bit slower, and more focus on defense as an offense, then you may be okay in a cruiser. Science, how ever, is probably out of the question. It is more of a utility ship, using tricks and timing rather then raw power.

You said you really enjoyed the ground combat of a tactical officer, so I don't know how much you'll like science or engineering. Once again, both are more support roles. Engineer has the ability to debuff baddies, and fabricate machines that attack and/or heal. Science debuffs baddies, and buffs/heals allies.

Unlike other popular MMO's (*cough* WoW), STO's classes each unique and don't share many aspects with the other classes. Thats why there are only 3, rather then 7 or 8. If you liked Tactical, why not do it again? But this time take a different route with him. Or not. Nothing wrong with a ton of tactical characters =P

Thanks for the great post. =]

I wouldn't mind slowly disabling an enemy and then tearing them down. I had a 6-8 KDF Eng in beta for a little and it was alright. I had probably been spoiled by the amount of buttons I had on my Tactical by comparison. I like having a lot of buttons to press. xD I had a shield gen turret and some speedy shield repair thing.

Considering I have only three character slots, I know I want to make either an Engineer or a Science. I'm open to trying something new, but based on what I've been playing, I was hoping for someone to tell me I should lean more toward X than Y. :p

If you like buttons, Then pop a tactical in a science vessel.

The science vessel automatically comes with target: shields/aux/engines/weapon systems.
Thats 4 buttons, though you'll mostly be mashing Target systems: Shield/weapons. You'll just have to learn how to work science BO slots, which can be fun. Sure you wont blow your baddie to pieces in 5 seconds, but you'll have them wishing you did. Plus if you go with a tactical officer, you'll still get his attack bonuses and wont be so crippled as far as damage goes.

As one of my Fleet members put it:

"Pros: He can he will find other ships, he can with bridge officers keep them from attacking, even make them attack eachother. later in his/her career this Captain will be a force... a fast moving scout ship able to deal damage and mark cloaked ships for entire fleets to target and shoot. something the S/S will not beable to do properly. The skill Fire on My Mark, when placed on a cloaked ship doesn't decloak the ship just yet... but makes it so that everyone else can target and fire on the ship while it is cloaked... it takes timing but if done right will destroy many ships out right. With the right skills this captain can be a damaging controller. Able to mimic the AOE abilities of a S/S Captain... with one advantage higher Crit %.

Cons: This captain will not be as skilled in finding targets as a S/S Captain, will not be as capable of controling entire battle fields like the S/S Captain. In fact he will dislike the weapon systems and lack of multilevel tactical stations the Escort has. Unable to bring the pain, and barely able to handling multiple targets. Reduced to hit and debuff... instead of hit and run."

Those are some pretty hefty pros and cons. I think I'd feel strangled after awhile if I'm used to being on the offensive. Another friend said I'd really like Engineering one I got my own drones. Mobile turrets? I guess? It gives me the freedom to move around.

Maybe I should just try Eng/Science Vessel.

I personally love Engineering but in saying that it's just my personal opinion

That's what I'll probably try again. But the earliest drone kit is like Captain.

Yeah that's probably the only downside atm. I don't mind the Turret, Shield combo kits though

I am personally an engineer in a science vessel myself, but I didn't like the pure offense of a tactical officer. I like the offensive utility of the Engineer, the turrets and such. The space skills help keep me alive while my science BOs disable the baddies.

But towards endgame, I'll be mostly support and that is where I want too be. Can you see yourself flying in, disabling the baddies and buffing your buddies?

I can see myself blowing stuff up. I ending going Eng/Cruiser(?).

I might play around with SV, but I doubt it.
