Considering how powerful cannons are supposed to be, seeing and hearing them fire is like the opposite of impressive. From an audiovisual perspective, they should be a lot more intimidating than the current "pew pew spitballs!" thing they do now.
Nay not only regarding the sound...they are sooooo tiny...firing tribbles would look more impressive Look at those movie parts where the Defiant fired it's cannons...that looked really impressive...but in STO they are...soooo tiny...sweet

I guess you haven't fired the disruptor or plasma heavies...they are big and sound it...
Support bigger "balls"
I switched from heavy dual phaser cannon MK IV to dual phaser cannon MK V - first time i thought they don't shoot  Then I saw *something* flying to the enemy - firth thought my men sacrifice themself and jump to enemy to do kinetic damage - then I realized that those ink-drops should be my canons...a bit "more" wouldn't hurt!
Yes that would be very cool to have some jaw dropping effects in space, but over all it is pretty good so far in my opinion, and hopefully will get even better!

Here's a video that features the Defiant blasting the snot of out of stuff with its cannons. Skip ahead to :50 to see how cannons were portrayed in the show.
