I can only hope that they fix this, but I suppose it wouldn't be hard to explain this away by just saying that theyve perfected the warp engines by this time in the Universe to not require the folding mechanism
I'm sure they look less ridiculous than the tier three science vessels. Tier three make my eyes sad.
I felt the same way at first. I liked the cool primary hull of the Horizon Class, but after really see it up close. My like turned into dislike. But after actually flying it for awhile, it finally grew on me. I even thought of some class notes which explains the look of the Primary Hull. (And that reminds me I need to write it up and post it on the forums)
No the Intrepid doesn't raise its nacelles when going into warp. Just like the Klingon Bird of Prey's don't raise or lower their wings when cruising or attacking. I suspect it would actually take some time to animate those actions for the ship models, which also is likely why the Galaxy class doesn't separate it's saucer section or the Prometheus doesn't do the Multi-vector Assault Mode like they do on the canon versions of the ships.
Yeah, it would be an animation. But somehow I don't think doing a nacelles 'fold up' animation would be very hard. Not nearly as tough as, say.... the rolling move animation for your character (double-tap on your move key). Still, it would take 'some' time and that's probably why it's not there.
Maybe this is something that we might see in a future update?
As an amateur game programmer (and professional programmer) I can say... it would be difficult to allow for the warp nacelles to move JUST during warp.
The reason is because it would be a "one-off" in the code. You would have to code something specifically in the engine just for that ship.
Generally, this can be difficult to do. It's much easier to just let the engine do what it does and not worry about special cases like Intrepid.
That said, I would love it if they could put this in the game but I'm not holding my breath.

Only reason why I have stayed away from science vessels..... the Dev that thought all Tier 3 science vessels need to look like Hamster Habitrails needs to be fed alfalfa and force to run in a wheel odd hours of the night.

Actually the Olympic class is right out of ST:TNG, especially the final episode, "All Good Things". The U.S.S. Pasteur that is captained by Beverly Crusher is an Olympic class.
The other two look like more abstract takes on the Olympic. Personally, I love the redesign of the head "bubble" on both the Horizon and Hope classes.
I'm only Lt. Cmdr 6 right now, but I've already got the extra credits necessary to purchase an extra Tier 3 sci vessel. To each their own I guess.

I thought I was the only one, I actually love those ship shapes, they are so different from anything else you see in Federation ships.
Before they even consider making animated nacelles they should fix the model itself.
Right now it has "new" torpedo launchers under the shuttle bay, and the actual torpedo launchers has engines trails comming from them rather than the actual impulse engines on the ship.

You know it's all down to "upgrades", dude. lol
I love the Tier 3 science vessels Especially my fish bowl sperm thing!

Riiiight!
Its mind boggling that they can get obscure ships like the Cheyenne looking great and canon, but mess up so badly on well known ships like the Intrepid.

They have. It was all explained in a technical manual that they've redesigned the warp core or something. Basically a retcon to the Galactic Speed Limit nonsense introduced in TNG, thus rendering the variable-geometry nacelle pylons obsolete as far as the "Galactic Speed Limit" is concerned.
Was gutted about it to be honest. I finally reached Cpt. 1 about 3 hours ago, and that is the only downside to the Intrepid-class. That being said, it would have only been a small part of the game, I'm perfectly happy with my USS Norwich - Intrepid-Class
The folding nacelle design was used as an experiment on the Intrepid class originally to allow sustained travel at Warp 9.975 without tearing subspace in the process
Later designs somehow resolved the subspace issue, allowing for higher speeds without damaging subspace. for instance the Enterprise-E which is a soverign class vessel is capable of sustained warp of 9.985 with fixed nacelles.
Due to this, one can assume that any newer intrepid class starships would not need to be fitted with the more complex folding design and as such I gather that the design was altered to use the new fix for warp 9 rather than the folding nacelle design.

Only problem is that the folding mechanisms are actually still physically present on the model.
did you see the tier5 escort ships??woah these are so ugly........damn it^^
i would take the defiant class if i could^^
but tier5 has another officer so i have to take that ugly ship

Its a shame considering they animated the Scimitar wing deployment weapon, it looked ace.

The Pastuer doesn't count, it was a Hope class ship, not Olympic, from an alternate timeline. The Noble was the Olympic class version of it from the current timeline. Either way, it was a hospital/medical supply ship, NOT a science ship.
Utterly baffling why they would put this obscure ship in and leave out the Nebula class which IS a science ship, as well as considerably more popular than the Olympic class.

from what i have read in the beta forums, there is a technical difficulty implementing annimations on the models because of the game engine, so its not something thats going to be fixed anytime soon. I reakon that in a year or two, when the devs develop a propper standalone sto engine and upgrade then we might see something like this. (eve went through a few engine upgrades over its life so far, so its not unknown)
i think that it might be smart for them to develop 2 seperate engines, that are loosely linked, one for ground (thats a bit more like the mass effect engine, thats just my preference), and an improvement in the space engine...... although i would like the idea of being able to do EVA stuff and landing some of the ships planet side, like the intrepid, do do missions but that would enquire a huge engine overhaul....never know thoug, they seemed to underestimate the game demand, so if the demand is still here in a few months, some weight might be shifted....

I liked them better folded up rather than down. Looked too flat when down and more like an actual Federation vessel up.

You sure you're not just confusing them with the strut mounted impulse engines?
