The Best way to use Torpedo Spread?

Why use a Torpedo spread when a High Yield torpedo seems to be a better way to go. Can some one explain teh pro's and Cons Please?

Torpedo Spread is an AoE attack, High Yield Torpedo is a extra-damage attack. Essentially, if you're faced with multiple enemies who are clustered close to one another, and you want to damage them all at once, you'd use Torpedo Spread, but if you want to blow up just one enemy whose shields you just punched through, HY Torpedo is the skill for the job.

In short, Torpedo Spread seems wasted on a single target, and HY Torpedo doesn't help you against multiple targets.

It is very effective at destroying clusters of fighters, heh. Or really hurt a couple of frigates with damaged shields, for example in Fleet Action encounters.

Not good in solo. If you in team and people attack different ships, yes. But 1v1 this skill is a waste. I mean even you damage a shield of 1 enemy and try to shot spread torpedoes at him he may not even get damaged sometimes. This AoE skill has way too wide spread. It is useful only in mass battles like squadron against squadron in PvP, say couple cruisers loaded with torpedo launchers and launch spread from a few ships to support the front lines. maybe then its useful. Like an artillery sorta, other than that its meh. I haven't found any good use to it in 12 levels. Taking ships out 1 by 1 works much faster.

When it glitches you get to fill the skies with torpedos!

That alone makes it work it IMHO.

The explosion of the ship you just destroyed with high yields > torp spread as far as damage dealt to nearby targets.

Also I've noticed if you fire a spread from distance, it detonates where the target was, not where it actually is a few seconds later, usually closer to you. Spread works best up close. Maybe that'll change when skill levels go up ofc...

If you zip at your target and fire it at the last second... All three will hit and do good DPS.

It's also a good way to get the aggro or kill fighters

simply put, DONT. it's far to situational and altogether a bad ability.

It just doesn't fit with the game mechanics.

You can't do much damage with torpedoes unless their shields are down, so an AOE attack that hits everywhere is pretty worthless since you'll usually only be able to take down one shield facing on one ship at a time.

I've heard it's useful for hitting a downed shield that isn't facing you but I havn't tried it enough to determine if it really does enough damage to make it worthwhile. That's also fairly situational, so I don't see how it would be better than taking another High Yield or Tactical Team.

I run an escort with tactic officer abilities as follows: Rank 1 spread and target shields. Rank 2 high yield. High yield is my bread and butter, if I'm coming about for another torp I make sure my beam aray drops their shields before my canons face them.

I've found an interesting niche use for spread though. If an enemy has turned their weakest shield away from me I can either hit evasive maneuvers and zip back around to it, or I can hit torp spread and have a pretty good chance of putting some hull damage on that side.

just bear in mind that regardless of the animation and enemy position torpedo spread will always hit the enemy you targeted when you fired with it like a normal torpedo, even if its flow to the other side of you when the explosion animation goes off, however this doesn't seem to work with the aoe effect.

It SHOULD be effective and hit multiple targets.

Right now it just fires a salvo in the general direction and if you are unlucky only one hits something random.

It is incredibly hard to even hit a minefield with it.

It sucks, just like Beam Fire At Will or Beam Overload.
I notice a pattern, except High Yield every Ensign Tactical ability is rather poor. :(

im sorry but solo its a good attack i use both and i can do aoe dmg of each torpedo to all enemies around my main target and really put a hurting to them. while torpedo spread is on CD i can use high yield to finish off anything... its how you use it solo or grouped its all how you use it

I usually like to put it on Rye or sometimes whole wheat. I also usually say something like "look at that photon spread"...just to enhance the effect...:D

It's good for hitting that weak point when it's not facing you. I noticed that where with High Yield I might waste the effect on a well shielded side as they turn away from me, torpedo spread seems to hit the target all over, so more of the damage gets through the shields into the hull. Mileage may vary.

Also, not good to use this if you're an escort in the middle of a fleet battle as the first one to fire. It gets you a lot of agro. It's sad though that they put both skills on a cooldown. in CB I could charge high yield and then torpedo spread and fire three high yield torpedoes.
