Point of the Ship device slots?

What is the point of the ship device slot? Only thing that goes in there are batteries at this point as far as i can tell. I believe on Tuesday the reg matter generator will go into it leading me to think it's not almost useless to have more than two but still. I guess having more ship devices would be cool they are just not in the game yet?

    Those batteries are actually pretty useful in a tight spot...

    The only one I have ever used was the Shield bats. Every 5 minutes as needed a boost of shields
