About the launcher screen

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if leaving the first launcher window up updates itself when the server goes from down to up, or if you must relaunch the launcher to get an update as to server status. I'd rather just leave it up and watch for the server to go up but I don't know if it updates, so I'm restarting every 5 minutes right now. Thanks!
