How to get rid of Shield Ring!!!!

Ok - I know it's *NOT* just me, but there HAS to be a way to toggle off the Shield Ring!? Right??
You'd think that Cryptic would put in some kind of way to turn that thing off. You have your console down below that shows shield info, and enemy shield info up on top. Then the ships all have thier insipid shield rings flying around. When they get HIT - you see the shields react so why need the shield rings underneath them.
