I can understand new players being taken through the training missions (USS Khitomer etc.) to learn the ropes of the game, but must we go through it every time we create a new character? I admit, I'm one of the lucky ones for whom the game seems to be working 99.9% correctly, but having just created another character, I'm forced (as far as I know) to go through it all again. Can there be some way of just going straight to the Sirius sector and starting to get real missions?
On a similar note, playing the same missions all over again is a tad boring and really kills the fun of creating different characters. Could there not be a pool of parallel missions of equal difficulty level, and whenever a character gets to a certain mission-giving NPC they get a random one of those parallel missions, so not everyone gets the same mission at the same stage and starting with a new character won't necessarily get the same missions? This would increase the fun of the game exponentially and make creating new characters far more enticing.
I agree with you, and some other games actually do this, allow you to skip the starting island or instance or whatever and just drump you right into your starting city (Sol in this case).
Actually after you have your first character past level 5, you're able to create a Klingon toon with a full compliment of BO's and it starts at level 5. I with it were the same with Federation toons we create after our 1st one if past level 5.
Well how are Cryptic supposed to know if you have done the training mission before or not?
About the only thing they can do is put in an option to allow you to jump past the training missions and put you in your ship at Starbase 1 and with the choice of BOff your get as a reward in the training mission.
But you know a lot of people would jump right past it regardless of whether they have done it or not and then we would have even more spam in zone chat about how to fly the ships, fire weapons, run around, etc.
Doing it this way is the best of a hard set of choices.
Besides, it doesn't take all that long to do the training missions. Once you know what to do you just run through them.

Well, they just have to look how they did it in Champions Online, their *own* video game using the *same* engine : the tutorial is skippable after you completed it once
