Is it better for a tactical toon to be on a escort ship?

I started a toon being tactical, in doing that the escort ships have tactical powers to use. The thing is I want to fly cruisers. My question is can i be tactical on a cruiser without loseing any pvp gain?

There was a nice post about this during open beta (i should have bookmarked it)

But from what i understand, but i could be wrong, is when you get into higher ship tiers you wont be able to use high tier BO commands on a cruiser since they dont have the slots for them.

So you will be flying your tier 4 cruiser with only Torpedo High Yield II

Edit: Just found the thread in my browser history, but the OP edited his post: Linky

The main advantages of a captains class is the free skills you get, not being able to train one BO skill one more level

If you want some really nice damage buffs be a tact/cruiser, if you want some really nice shield buffs and other defense buffs on top of your engineering buffs be eng/cruiser

That thread assumes the only way you can learn those skills is by teaching them yourself to your BO's, you dont need to do that you can just for example buy a tactical Bridge officer with that skill on the marketplace and simply train it to your own bridge officer

But like i said, the main traits from being a captain is not being able to train BO's but geting those really awesome abilities like attack patern alpha and rotate shield frequency which has nothing to do with BO's

attack pattern alpha increases turning speed, which is handy to have on a cruiser. If you go for star cruiser instead of assault cruiser it could be a nice balance. You get to enjoy the higher crew, have 2 engineering and 2 science boffs, and the 1 tac boff you get is not that bad since cruisers dont really get many tactical boff options since the beam skills kind of suck. So load him up with a torpedo skill and a few attack patterns, then you and him can hold down the tactical aspect of the cruiser fairly well.

While you wont be able to use your tactical officers mk 3 skills (you can still train em, just not use space ones) you will be instead, able to use mk 3 engineering skills.

Your captain class has no bearing on what mk 3 bridge officer abilities you can use, its only the ship that changes that.

What your captain class alters is what unique captain skills you get access to in ADDITION to the skills the ship gives you access to with bridge officers.

The only real penalty with flying something like a cruiser as a tactical captain is that to train your mk 3 engineering bridge officer abilities you need to use rare bridge officers to train it.

But saying you can't use a mk 3 tactical skill because you went tactical in a cruiser is silly, because you can't use those skills if you were an engineer in a cruiser, as its all the ship that decides what bridge officer abilities you can use.

Why do people assume that Just because a player is a taactical officer, they want all of their boffs to be tactical as well etc.? You can train any space skills on any officer, so it is ground skills you are choosing your captain for.

This who BS about Engineers are tanks, Tactical are glass cannons, and science officers are buff and debuff isn't true. Any captain can be skilled for any role, the only difference is a small number of abilities.

Playing a different ship type might even be beneficial. An engineer in an escort has abilities tht make the escort far less liley to explode. And a tactical player in a cruiser will be able to get more out of the large amount of weapons (s)he can bring to bear.

The key to answer the OP's question is simeply to make sure that you understand that your ship determines the lions' share of your abilities and playstyle in combat, since your bridge crews' stations (and the rank of the stations) are determined by ship type, your ships shield/hull/speed/turn rates are all attributes of the ship, and the equipment you can outfit your ship with is determined by the ship's slots. The 4 or 5 career-dependent space abilities your captain earns himself are only going to tweak your role and play experience in space slightly from the ship's baseline.

So if a cruiser is what you want to drive, then you'll predominantly play like a cruiser. On the ground, if you want to play with tactical kits and abilities, then pick a tactical officer, and know that you'll get a few tidbits that will affect your cruiser play, like a temporary maneuver buff or a small damage buff.

There's another aspect to being a Tac captain that, as far as I can tell, doesn't apply to the other classes. Your Attack Pattern Alpha ability is boosted (rather substantially) by the Escort and Heavy Escort ship skills. Even if you're going into a cruiser, it would probably be to your benefit to get 5-6 ranks in each of those skills to boost your main damage buff. It'll also improve the power's turn-rate buff.
