Many years ago, I founded a fleet on one of my Klingon characters. Over the years I have recruited players and put time and resources into it to make the amenities available for everyone. I get online on said character recently to find out that I no longer have a fleet, I found it odd seeing how I was a fleet head, not only disappointing. If any of you guys could enlighten me as to what happened, I would appreciate it.

What was the time gap between when you last logged in? There is an inactivity timer for fleet leaders that after 30 days if you don't log in, a Rank 6 (Lets call them Vice Admirals) can claim leadership of the fleet.
There's an inactivity timer for fleet leaders. essentially if none of the rank 7 fleet leaders log in for a specific time period, a rank 6 person can log on and instantly promoted themselves to R7. From there they can start demoting the old R7, namely you in this instance and then boot you out if they wanted. It's meant to be a way for fleets to still move forward even if someone at R7 disappears. Depending on how long you've been out that's the likely answer.
"Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey and reminds us to cherish every moment, because it will never come again." - Jean Luc Picard in Star Trek Generations
You abandoned your hoard and some tricksy hobbitses looted it.
More seriously, you apparently stopped playing the game for long enough that the people still playing took over your job and booted you. Which is reasonable since a returning absentee might go on a rampage and wreck things for the people that kept the fleet going in their absence.

Not mention that Cryptic (and DECA) can't see the future and thus cannot assume an Absentee will return at some point, IIRC the system was implemented because there was too many disfuntional fleets because their leader was absent but there was no way of replacing them, so thing in those fleets just didn't work, so Cryptic implement a system where after a while a non-active leader will be demoted.

Those faceless masses that you crushed beneath your velvet lined shoes have elevated themselves, and thrown off the chains of tyranny!
No longer shall the Black Dragon terrorise them! - your reign of terror is ended!
