STO 3D ship printing is back from IRLabs, in a limited form (with an elephant in the room)

Integral Reality Labs (behind GamePrint) are relaunching a limited run of 3D printed STO ships at ~8inch scale and with bases. Notable ships include the Lexington, Pathfinder, Eclipse, and Ent-F Oddy. These come under the banner of "Fleet 01", implying future runs of more ships if justified.

The rub: these also come with digital collector tokens signed off on an unspecified blockchain, to use with an in-house app. Ie. NFTs, though they don't use that term explicitly. The only thing separating this from a digital product registry system is just the mention in the details to a blockchain. Is this the end of the world? Well, it's a [questionable proposition for consumers] for the lower tier option ($40 for a 2D ship placard in resin) but the ~8" ship prints are on point for the old pricing system ($100usd with base included, vs. $75 for 7inch or $155 for 9inch and no base included). They aren't up charging for the digital element (with the 8" ship prints, at least).

So if you 1) were in the market for a larger 3D print, 2) happen to see a ship you wanted (ex. Odyssey) and 3) ignore the digital product registry system for their app, then this is fine. But it's a step down from what we had before (including: a limited run of 200 ships per class), which might be why there's been no official announcement from Cryptic yet. Perhaps this wasn't their first choice (as STO ran a superior version of this system via printing your digital starships from a full game you could interact with, no separate "ownership app" needed), but they'll keep partnering to have *some* option for players to get newly made STO models.
