Wing Commander space trait?

Can someone explain what XP and ranking means when applied to hanger pets? I have several different pets and don't see any sort of ranking attached to them.

When you use pets they obtain stars while you are in combat. That is your pets ranking up. They have a total of 5 stars. The wing commander trait reduces the amount of time pets require to level up to 5 stars.
