I think the devs need to seriously look into porting an Xbox/PlayStation console style control to PC in anticipation of the Steamdeck's broader release. It might even behoove them to partner with Valve since (I assume the real reason why console controls were never ported was because) some of the code and interfaces may be proprietary to said consoles. These things are selling for $2k right now on the scalper market and as people migrate to the device, they are going to migrate to the games that will play well on this 'switch killer'.
I equate this as a touchstone moment for the game, akin to going F2P. It was a bold move back then to shift from a subscription to what we now have, and it took forethought from the upper levels and hard work from everyone (I'm sure) to make the transition. But--then as now--in order for Star Trek Online to survive in an increasingly competitive environment with ever demanding customer expectations, change is required.
If this device proves successful (and early indicators suggest it will be) a new wave of 'PC consoles' will take an ever larger chunk out of the existing player base as people transition to the platform they are more comfortable with. New PC gamers will eschew STO as 'incompatible' with their machines. In short, failure to prepare as the Steamdeck gets into more and more player's hands means fewer people playing this game when the dust settles.
Full disclosure: I did purchase a buyin for the Steamdeck last year and expect it sometime in Q3 this year. While I may be in the minority of STO PC players currently, I expect that to shift. At this time, I know several of the games I enjoy most (RDR2/Red Dead Online, Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc) will function flawlessly on this new 'console' and I expect it to become my gaming machine for years to come. I will spend many hours )and dollars) on those games.
Will STO be one of them?
Now, if I may would like to lead us in todays chant, that we might hold back the darkness for another day.
A mouse and keyboard are superior to controllers. A mouse and keyboard are superior to controllers. A mouse and keyboard are superior to controllers.
All hail RNGesus.
