Q's winter wonderland

Guess cryptic took out the ability to run the fastest on ice without other NPC's racing against you, little nephew can't do it, would do it for him if we lived in the same state. he asked me if he give me his info, if I would do it for him, told him no, cryptic would ban his account, he isn't happy. lol, he ran like 9 tries.

I didn't know that was ever an option. It sounds like a bug/exploit.

Tell him to hold down the sprint key at the start to get a head start then keep sprinting for all of it using roll to change direction. I've read that getting Q to turn you into a spider is useful but I don't bother with that. The frosty boots are good for increasing speed as well but you'd have to earn them first.

I can't do it either, as far as I'm concerned the damn race is impossible. I loathe the summer and winter events, this is the first time I've bothered trying to get a winter ship and I'm hating every second of it, I just want to get my daily progress over with but as far as I can tell the only activity that isn't on a massive timer is the race and it's simply not possible to avoid sliding off the track while going fast enough to beat the little spider thing.

Instead of rolling to change direction, let go of the forward and run controls then jump - this will bring you to a complete stop almost all of the time. You can then start running using the shift key again in your new direction, and repeat the the jump-stop as you go.

I believe it is probably not as fast as using the roll method, because you tend to be able to resume moving again more quickly that way, but I have often found trying to do a roll reliably difficult at all ingame, so using this method is easier and more reliable if you have problems and by using shift-run between the corners and jump-stops you will still be faster than the npc pursuing you.

It has worked for me since the Winter event was first run, and about the only time you will have problems will be if you are hit by a lag spike and are no longer where you think you are on the track.

Forget trying to do the Roll trick. Treat the race like a Rally track. Turn early into corners and when coming to a sharp corner, just quickly release your key to stop running and press forward again to walk into the corner with momentum. It keeps you moving and turning smoothly and is nowhere near the hassle of attempting to roll.

They haven't. First run after server went up I got a free run. Show him my method and get him to practice 'drifting'. You can beat most NPC's by just walking the track.

Rolling is overall much easier and safer than letting go of the directional keys and press jump, but it takes longer to recover and resume running.

It's very efficient with The Fastest on Ice and pretty much the best way to win (unless you're used to drifting in Mario Kart and manage to pull it off during the race so you never stop running), but it won't help with the Competitive Race.

I managed to complete Fastest on Ice by never stopping running and anticipating the ice drift at the right times, while also occasionally using the patches of snow that aren't out of the boundaries of the track to just cancel the drift. Once, I even succeeded with the ice boots.

It's very satisfying but one mistake (turning too early or too late) and boom, disqualified.

I dislike both methods. Rolling and Jumping to halt momentum are too jerky for me. I just treat the track like I'm driving a Rally car game.

Just do Klingon Ice Fishing, it's easy on both PC and console. Plus you get to beat fish to death with your mighty fists!

The Karmpiri hunt is easy too as long as you run to keep up when it moves. Tides of Ice is reasonable just remember you need to get the dialog where you join the event and you need to be there the whole time.

This is how I run it too. Takes a bit to get used to doing it at first, but then I run six different accts to get the ship for family, so I get my feel for it pretty quick.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.

I think rolling or jumping are both good options for completing the race. Both work great as compared to leaving the track and getting disqualified. Use whatever works best.

Considerable distance can be gained against the npc through a couple of the straighter portions of the track so staying inbounds is job #1 as compared to keeping momentum.

I agree. I used to do the jump-stop move at big corners and would dash through straighter portions and didn't fail to 'win' the race.

Not sure if you can get a 'free' race (where the opponent doesn't appear), but last yeas I got that several times. Then I would simply trot the course and 'win'.

I got a free run, as I said earlier. Funnily enough, I seem to get alot of them on both PC and Xbox, and it could be to do with me pressing forward as I load in.

Hmm. I ran off the course a handful times the first year I did it, but I don't think I've ever failed by losing to the NPC racer. If I start right after someone else, I like to try catching up to their NPC.

(and yeah, I used to do the Roll method, but now I just hold down sprint and drift through the turns using the left & right buttons. Shooter controls, so I can quickly shift my direction on corners. K+M, not controller; and no lag certainly helps. No [Run] weapon, not sure if I still have Command spec slotted for the run speed.)

Personally, I'm a roller, but I use the armor that gives you a 25% speed boost for 3 seconds after you roll.

To the OP, is your nephew using the traits that boost speed? How about a weapon with the [Run] mod? Here's a list

    1) Traits from Terran rep (tier 1, Close Quarters Combatant), and Delta rep (tier 1, Physical Conditioning)
    2) Counter-Command rep armor (+25% runspeed for 3 seconds after performing a roll)
    3) [run] mod on ground weapons
    4) The Command Specialisation, (not Commando), Tier 1, top of the left tree, Forward March
    This one I haven't actually tested -
    5) Delta Alliance Elite ground set (two-piece bonus +5% Run Speed)

The speed boosts are nice but the OP's nephew is having difficulties just completing the race. What's needed is some basic tricks and techniques as mentioned above and hopefully a little bit of practice.

As someone else mentioned, it may be easier for them to just done one of the other events to get credit each day.

Also note that the cones to denote where the track is only gives a rough guideline. You're actually given a fair bit of leeway. Ex: the first couple turns can be large ignored by pointing yourself straight through the inset portions of the elevated spits extending into the track -- enough of both are still on the track that you can run straight over them. At which point, you're mostly facing the right direction for the third turn already.

Yep, that's part of how I drift through turns without stopping my sprint - I do the corners on the inside-edge snow. A bit more traction there. You can get pretty far outside the cones in a bunch of places.

This, too. I don't understand why the TFO doesn't award credit. Everything else already does, so why not the TFO as well?

Not everything - Snowball Fight does not.

The timer also lasts at least 5 minutes too long, increasing the wait before a "real" event.

It's too bad the game engine can apparently only handle one event at a time on the winter map, it would be nice to have more choice of what to do without waiting up to an hour for the event you really want.

That did force me into an awesome Tides of Ice last night though. There was enough of us that the escaped snowman count was ** 0 ** which has never happened for me before.
