My fleet and I were discussing the naming restrictions the other day and can't get our heads around why they're still in place. Some people have said 'for immersion' - well at this point when you're in a TFO with a female yellow alien called Homer Simpson carrying a giant cartoon phaser minigun and wearing a bikini or in a space match with a captain called 'Sexy thing' flying a ship called 'kum dumpsta' and 'D.V. is fun' I think having two ships called 'Enterprise' in the match would not bother me... ( I dunno about you.) If anything, it would be a pleasant change from some of the things ships are called.
Not that it stops the EnterpriseD or Enterprize's from popping up anyway.
The other thought was 'It stops two ships with the same name in missions.' - well not really? Unless you block basically every Federation ship name you've used for NPC's you'll run into one with the same name eventually.
For a game with such a strong RP community, myself included to some degree, being able to name the ships what we want would be really nice. Especially with ships being characters unto themselves in a lot of Trek and with our ability now to spend money to upgrade them further. It's a small quality of life change that wouldn't be difficult to implement or take a lot of time to carry out but would apparently make a lot people happy. At least the ones I've heard around the place anyway.
Food for thought I suppose.
