Welcome Back Display

bigb3bigb3 Member Posts: 42 Arc User
Hello. I'm writing in regards to a new display that's been introduced recently here in STO for the past week or so, the "Welcome Back" display. I'm curious as what kind of function it serves and if there might also be a way to reducing how frequently this pops up cause everytime I log into a toon or switch over to another one, this keeps popping up like crazy and it does tend to get a bit annoying after a while seeing it over and over again whenever I switch toons. Any feedback or input on this is always welcome and appreciated!

If you have a spare mouse key, bind Esc to it. It's surprisingly useful to get out of menus in general, not just keep the welcome back spam away. I made it initially break target in space so I stop losing them randomly, but found it super useful beyond that in the menus.

Just like visual spam on the ground and in space, which they keep adding to the point of total blindness, the popup spam is likely here to stay despite outright LIES that it was a bug. Until whoever's in charge gets fired, you can expect only more of this trolling of your own player base. They probably take particular delight in our endless complaints, but karma's a TRIBBLE and they've got it coming.

The really annoying thing is that, back when they launched the TRIBBLE thing, they asked for feedback on the forums. It was almost universally negative. And they responded to exactly none of it. Very aggravating.

Oh they responded to it. By saying it's a minority opinion and not worth talking about it any further. pig-3.gif

I was under the impression that the loading screen as it is now inadvertently reverted back to a previous state after a patch and when fixed should only appear once per day per account like it has for quite some time. Is this correct or is it currently working as intended?

It is in fact not "new".

However, back when it WAS new, people complained and the devs modified it to only show up when you initially log in each day... not every time you change characters.

It seems that last week's patch, or perhaps the week before, restored it to its original frequency.

Ah so it was an inadvertent rollback of the sort the sometimes happens after a patch. No need to get excited then. I'm cool with the once "once daily upon initial login" behavior it had and will have again once fixed.

It's a common psychological tool used in most 'free to play' MMO's. These pages usually feature something from the cash shop as a way to get your brain thinking about the store. Does it work? I would guess that data says it does because Cryptic has refused to listen to any feedback about removing it.

I am guessing it's tied to monetization and history has taught us that when it comes down to making money, Cryptic isn't very open to listening to feedback. These decisions are powered by their 'metrics' and common practices among similar games.

This is certainly not the first game of this type I have played with a pop up like this, but every other game does it once per login like STO used to. It might be reverted back, we'll see.

That is why I spend my money in WOW now, bought new mounts, pets and tokens for the auction house. Cryptic doesn't care, no more money for them here.

Well... yes, except that we don't know if the change was intentional or not.

Would like to think it was unintentional but I guess they could of just changed it and are waiting for player feedback...

Looking on the bright side though at least it doesn't ask you "are you sure" when trying to close it.

I can't say I pay attention to popup windows. I've been on the internet long enough to know they need to be immediately closed.

On reading this complaint it took me a long while to figure out what people were talking about because of the fact I just close it reflexively.

    ^^ 100% this.

And, as an extra, lame justification for the landing page, they removed the calendar first, so as to pretend you can see all the news on their landing page. But meanwhile it's just a hopelessly transparent ad-platform to get you to buy pack X or Y. And to throw it in your face, for every toon you switch between.

SWTOR has one that opens once per day per character. Theirs is considerably less obtrusive, though, only taking up the left edge of the screen.

Version control is apparently a foreign term to the STO team....

It having been so long since this behavior was normal tends to make me think that it wasn't just an older version that still had this feature in it that the recent build was based on, but rather that they were messing around with something that they thought was unrelated and reactivated this behavior by accident, or somebody was fiddling with this in particular, attempting to change the behavior in some way, possibly even intentionally to the current behavior. I mean, it's been years since this was normal behavior.
This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.

The SWTOR window also opens to remind you to claim your free daily reward and any other pending rewards. The Cryptic one pops up for no reason other then to advertise and annoy.

And yes, the SWTOR pop up is over on the left edge of the screen, the STO one is smack in the middle of your screen. The one thing worse about the SWTOR pop up is that it happens at a set time.. even if you're playing. I often have it pop up in the middle of a battle, but at least it's off to the side where it doesn't interfere with the game.

Not only that, but often the info that's being promoted on the landing page is out of date.

Because git is complicated, hard to use, and definitely not something with which every codemonkey should be familiar.
