XBOX Gold still needed for STO?

I keep reading that XBOX no longer requires a Gold subscription to play online for free to play games. However, my gold subscription expired yesterday and when I tried to launch STO, it said I was not allowed and directed me to purchase Gold. Has this not taken effect yet? Is STO not included? I'm curious because STO is really the only online game that I play. Thanks,

    I would guess Xbox support is the far better place to ask this.

    Really? If I'm looking for people who play STO on Xbox to see if anyone else is able to play without Gold, the STO forums is not a reasonable place to ask?

    Have you considered Xbox Game Pass Ultimate? It's the Netflix of gaming for PC and Xbox and it has a good list of games. Being able to play Outer Worlds day 1 paid for half a year of it right away.

    I can't answer about playing without Gold since I do have XBGPU

    Yes.

    You need either Gold or Game Pass for any online features of XBox. It doesn't matter if the game you're playing is free or paid, you can't use any online features without Gold status.

    Well no. That's because the change hasn't even been implemented by Microsoft yet.

    That’s a good change, I never liked that Live was required for every little thing. I was not aware they changed it, I haven’t touched my console in well over a year after I cancelled my gold. The way it used to be, if you didn’t have Gold, the console wasn’t much use.

    As for if this is the right place to post it.. sure it is.. but honestly, it would have taken less time to just google the answer. :lol:

    I figured it just hasn't been implemented by Microsoft yet, I was just wondering if anyone heard any ETA on when it might go live. I have had Ultimate for the past year and it has been great (I did enjoy Outer Worlds) but there really isn't anything currently of interest in Game Pass so at the moment I'm really only playing STO. I didn't want to renew a six month or year of Ultimate or Gold if STO is the only game I will be playing for the next few months and it won't be required soon.

    It's good to know we are not far from STO being truly free to play on XBOX. Maybe I will just do a one month of Gold for now.

    I did Google it and I was already aware of the above linked information. However I could not find anything about when exactly it would go into effect so I thought I would ask if anyone here had heard any new info.

    Fair Enough.

    Sounds like it should be in effect now, the good news is that given that the game is free.. the only thing you stand to lose is a little bit of time. Seems like you should be good to go though, download it and give it a go.

    I'm an XBOX Ambassador, and not even we know yet. As Dev's everywhere like to say "SOON". It has only been two weeks since they made the announcement, and all we know is 'in the coming months'.
