it looks like there will be a new event of this type, one focused on KDF

Probably there was a podcast where the current EP and Community Manager said there was going to be a Klingon Recruitment event. Might be something entirely different though but no one knows what it actually is as of yet. I sort of wished these would come back though after not realizing the rewards were account wide until I did the Dominion one and realizing the others were only completed mostly story wise.
