Perhaps I am odd for thinking so: but, giving the state of Star Trek Online and the way things are progressing: I honestly think that ALL races should have the 10 slots for ground and space traits open (not just Alien races anymore). I might be crazy for saying this and might get tossed out the airlock: but, being able to "augment" a race (apart from Alien) would be a nice addition. While the 10th trait slot offers more flexibility in how captains build their space and ground setups: it is kinda unfair to those captains who want to be Human, Vulcan, Joined Trill, etc to be limited by not have the option for the 10th trait slot. While I am sure not many people see this as a "problem" or issue: it would provide a different angle for captains creating new toons or even reworking older toons. I am sad to say that the majority of my toons in STO are the alien race because it is so much easier to build around that 10th slot. In my experience in STO: most of the characters in the fleets I am in and see on a daily basis are not your "classic" races; but, all alien races. That is just my opinion and I know there are some that see this as a null point; but, with the changes that have been made to making T6X ships: why not T6X captains as well. Like I said, I am probably going to be tossed out an airlock for saying this; but, at this point in game: the 10th ground and space trait slots should not just be limited to the alien race.
I couldn't agree more. It enrages me to discover that "aliens" have an extra trait slot. Why should I be penalised for being Vulcan? It's verging on racism! I need to go & practise Kolinahr.
I think you're missing the reason why Aliens get that 10th slot. Other races have traits 'built in'. If you check the Details button under the Species name in the Traits tab you'll see what your race traits are. Most of the races have multiple traits, you can see the list at https://sto.gamepedia.com/Player_race .
Aliens don't get "more" traits - they get "choose a single trait from the standard list" as a substitute for built-in racial traits.
That is not entirely true from a certain point of view. Take the Romulans for example. Their "built in" traits are selectable and thus take up a trait slot (i.e. Plasma Weapons Specialist on ground and Romulan Operative in space). Given that: should one want to take advantage of those traits: they will be down to 8 slots respectively. In that case: built in traits should be listed locked in a different section and not take up available trait slots.
