Can Bridge officers be equipped with gear that's rated higher than the rank of Commander?

I've been trying to spec my teams with Commander ranked weapons and armor, but I've been seeing others use Admiral ranked gear.

    boffs can use any rank and rarity gear.

    Bridge officers can be equipped with the same mark of gear that you can use yourself given your own rank.

    Well now I feel dumb, I've been seeing the rank requirement in red so I just assumed BOFFs could only wear Commander rank gear because they could only be promoted to Commander.

    Well this explains why they've been so squishy when I replay higher levels.

    that you can. if you are a lcdr they cannot equip commander gear
