How do you earn 50000 dilithium for playing 42+ days on an event when they only run for 21 days?

Completing events through the new event system allows a player to earn dilithium each day starting at 8000 and increasing by 1000 per day. Part of the explanation of how the new system would work when launched showed a table that indicated you could earn up to 50000 dilithium per day if you played an event for 42 days or more however the events so far have only been 21 days long... was the plan to roll over progress on dilithium collection to the next event? If so, it doesn't work as I've started from 8000 on each event so far... So does anyone know how do players will be able to earn larger amounts of dilithium through playing events?
