I am going to be getting a new computer in a few months and I would like to play the game with the settings at max or close to max with that said, what size/type of components will I need to consider for this to happen?

What screen resolution? At 1080p then a GTX 1060 or the AMD equivalent will certainly do that and will play most other games very well.

The system requirements for STO are actually quite low. What I would recommend is find a more modern game that you enjoy and build your system around that. Anything that can handle modern titles will be more then enough for Star Trek Online.

CPU, the game only requires an Intel Core 2 series CPU which is so old you can't even find them used anymore, same with the AMD Athlon X2.. they have been outdated for years. Anything in the Core I series.. even a 3rd gen would be overkill for STO. GPU is a very similar story, it requires AMD/Nvidia cards from Mid 2006.

If we were to make recommendations based only on STO, then we would be recommending a very low end system and the fear is that after you get it, you will want to try other games and be disappointed. As far as GPU goes, you might want to have a look at this article and make your determination based on your needs and your budget. There is also one for CPU's listed here. I like these listings because they're broken down into different budget classes so you can pick the one that best fits your needs. Not everyone needs a $1k+ graphics card or a top of the line CPU.. it's all based on what you need. My one recommendation is try and get the best GPU that you can afford so that you have a little bit of runway for the future.

Again though, I would strongly recommend building around something other then STO. Build for something newer and you will get a much better system. At this point, Star Trek Online will run on a potato or a super computer.. and it's going to lag on either one.
    Insert witty signature line here.

Pretty much this, it also depends on your budget. Are you building it yourself or are you buying a prebuilt. Need more info if you want us to be able to give real advice. Like are you getting a whole new system or keeping your monitor etc etc.

depending on budget, any i9 CPU or what is it, Razer? for the AMD 7 will be more than enough CPU. the graphics is the big variable. are you running a single 1900x1200 monitor or 4 4k? the more desktop the more horsepower I have a GTX 1660 and it runs 2 1900x1200 monitors with STO on max settings. no way will it be enough if I went to hi rez monitors
