I got an AFK penalty, and it happened after I stopped getting an interact in the "adjust parts" phase. It was in the last few seconds, so it didn't matter, but I didn't get a new "adjust parts" interact pop up, and then my rocket went 0 distance, and I got an AFK penalty.
I also got the notification about the penalty as soon as the results went up and the activity completed, which happened as normal (no delay on the final "mission over" dialog box).
I haven't gotten an AFK, but I have been hit with the bug of the game not recognizing that I found a part. So I went to another pile and found a green part and it acknowledged and even gave me the blue part I found before.
This seems to be the only bug I've hit. I've usually run from the spiders as they stop following you when you get to the tables.
I've always gotten the marks and badge.
Now a LTS and loving it.

I haven't gotten the AFK bug yet, but this queue seems more buggy than ever. Last one I ran, two of us got a full purple rocket and one of those blew up after launch for zero distance. What is the point of the AFK penalty in this queue?

I did not get an AFK penalty, but I did have a new (to me) problem. Twice during the parts collection I picked up a part that should have been usable, but it did not register. I don't know if this is a new bug introduced with the new voiceover or just something that had not happened to me all the other times.
Also, I don't know if this is a change or just a VERY strange result, but at the end we had one person with 3 "Excellent" parts and the rest of us had 2 Excellent, 1 Great. The 3 parts rocket went farther than any I've seen before in ANY previous matches and all 4 of the 2/1 part rockets went roughly the same distance, just a little shorter than the 3 part and also farther than I've generally seen in any other match.
Were I to guess, I'd wonder if the randomness of the launches had been removed and replaced with a set number or set range per part quality. Which, if that happened, I think is a mistake. Maybe it needed to be a little more reliable before, but this would take some of the fun out of the ending. Maybe, if it was changed this way, make the set ranges larger with more overlap between quality.
Seems like there's something in the works for the First Contact Day event...

I have gotten that bug too. I'd pick up a part and it wouldn't register. Case in point: I picked up a blue hull part and it didn't register, so I went to another pile and picked up a green part. It registered that I had found a part and even gave me the blue part from the first pile instead of the green one from the second pile. This happened yesterday, before today's patch.

I ran it today, but didn't get an AFK penalty.
I'm thinking at this point, I should just play it safe and buy out to conplete the prize acquisition.

I've never gotten this AFK before or after the Patch or Patch to the Patch on any of my Characters that ran this.

On this, what I found that works, is that since it didn't register the part. You can keep gathering parts. As soon as you pick up another part, be it better or worse, it will give you the popup for both parts being found and should register the better quality one.

Yes, that's what happened.
I ran into another bug just now. I was gathering parts fine and returning them, then right at the very last, in stabilizer area, I ran back with a purple part just as time runs out. it won't let me drop it off or adjust parts. That's when I notice my backpack missing. Well, I figure "There goes that game"
But it did give me the marks, mats and badge box, so s'all was good. Just my rocket with blue engine, hull and purple stabilizer blew up. *Shrugs*

Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything.
It is actually not excuseable to just say oh its new and throw it at us and to heck with bugs as we don't respond to anything you report or problems. I have read the second page so if there is a dev response hopefully it is we are aware and going to fix it. The game has always been sloppy when it comes to bug fixes or should I say Q&A. To me easy solution, when you think it is good to go, award something for those who pre-test things like, maybe giving them two daily completiions and/or more dil or something. I don't need tribbles, I don't need more pets, I don't need more collectibles to have. I just looked at my inventory in the bank and all the stuff that has little or no value other than cosmetic or some sort of trinket for nothing.
I do this mission so I don't have to stay on any longer than I have to. It feels like the game has been cheapened with this 2-3 week repeat and rinse events. Yes getting a ship token is great. Problem is I don't have shipyard or dock space. Since it is still only applicable to one character, I am not going to blow all my dil on buying all my toons on the account more shipyard or dock space. They should include either with monetary/or dil conversion a free dockyard space or simply give us a dockyard or shipyard space. I have probably a full year + of ships I can't use because of the fact that my best character really doesn't need any new ship to finish missions.
Now one thing I have tried with the afk thing, is that instead of standing still at the rocket launch, or run around the rocket till launch, then I watch it, then I just scan (aka look) up into the sky and turn around as if I was marveling at the blue sky and I have avoid afk penalties. I know the backpack has been missing for me so I executed alt-f4 to simulate a drop connection as I was having other issues caused by no backpack. I am sorry to those who are still loyal or diehards about this game and the devs. I have been this way since they first announced a company was working on a next-gen era Star Trek online game (the first company that never finished it and cryptic then worked on what we have now. However there just doesn't seem to be any zeal to the content, to fixing bugs, to coming with new event ideas. As I mentioned in another post, it just fills like this is filler content so they can work on the next episode or perhaps they have been forced to cut back on hours to keep the game up and so they need these mini-events put in between the main seasonal events I don't know. If they perhaps would communicate with us, like lets say hey we are being put on a shoestring budget or CBS has locked the content to only their two new shows on their must subscribe or you can't watch new Star Trek content. I sure wish Gene or Majel was still with us and saw what the IP has been dragged through, I am pretty sure they would allow it to be treated the way it has or the fans treated either.
I love the Star Trek genre but I find it harder and harder to want to sign on other than if there is a valid reason like a free ship token, double dil, seasonal major content but beyond that it is just so repetitive now. I thought where they had the one new method where there was three patrols you could do or the mission, at least it showed promise
I would prefer they stop this, and instead complete a story line arc of 4-6 episodes. Then say you have to complete them on X number of your characters in order to get the prize/reward that unlocks on the account. Now how many on your account would have to do it, I would hope, for those who have 20 characters for example, they would have do twenty. Find someway to work new content that must be played through with a little extra time for those who can't be here everyday.
However no excuse for the afk penalty and no excuse for not telling us there is a problem and could we send them data logs or something so they can see what is happening. The rubberbanding is only getting worse. Over in Neverwinter same thing with the rubberbanding and of course signing in only to be told map transfer failed (I don't know if they came up with a solution to that or not but I more or less gave up on Neverwinter. They need to bring the foundry back using the same tools that they do. Just warn those who make the missions that you will need to debug any time there is a major addition to their tools or code, anything to give us something new and different.
So lets see if afk will get me the next time. Perhaps the afk is part of the event now, who knows. I know today I watched, one table start on fire, then right next to it another table, then the next table and the next table. I was shocked to see that 4 fires broke out (and this was before they had left any parts even. I also don't like not being able to do a favor for a tune that is out being able to put out their fire (isn't teamwork a part of the TFO purpose and working together as part of the Star Trek Ethos). Oh well maybe Trump is actually making the mission, don't know what to think of this world anymore. Just crazy and more crazy each day.
Still broken. It still issues a AFK penalty even if you build a complete rocket. It still occasionally fails to recognize a found part. It now occasionally fails to trigger the adjust parts screen. Also a new bug, no player/parts window.

As of doing this mission I got the afk ban for completing the TFO event despite the fact that I score pretty high, completed the mission and rewarded with a ban despite the fact that they claimed it was supposed to go down for 20 minutes to fix the issue on X1. For now all I can suggest is avoiding the 'Model Rocket Launch' TFO to avoid afk bans and do the 'One night in Bozeman to avoid bans sadly.
Well, a problem is because all this stuff is so hush-hush and they love being real cutesy about things in general, it doesn't even drop for a day or two on Tribble for some testing beyond their, not-so-thorough internal QA.

Sounds like no further word on a fix, another day where I may as well probably be forced to play the solo mission again instead of the rocket one to avoid the afk ban/bug....that's if the servers work today.
Doesn't need patched so much as excised and destroyed to prevent future incursions.
Built rocket, put out 3 fires on the bench, did the scanning thing which triggered the ground material collection endeavour, got third place and the afk penalty. Logged on other account and same thing happened to that one, minus the nonsense of the fires rocket built, scanned and afk.

Sure the penalties have been bad but today I have noticed the servers have been awful today, which is making it difficult to check if the afk ban 'bug' is still in effect since I'm having trouble getting onto STO.
