Oldtimers probably remember that Cryptic once ran a couple of IRC channels.

Cryptic abandoned them long ago but the server network is still there and it's easy to reconfigure Pidgin from XMPP to IRC, connect to irc.gamesurge.net and join channel #sto
IRC also works well with your smartphone since it's only text based and uses bandwidth measured in MB per month (yes that's megabyte). So you can easily stay online in the chat at all times.
There's also a web based client linked in Cryptic's announcement. These days you need to use http://webchat.gamesurge.net/ instead.
There's not much action in the channel atm but it becomes what we want it to become. At least it's a semi official place to chat outside the game for those who want to do that.
