There are some interesting items (such as the
Hirogen blast rifle) which are only available to characters of a particular faction. It occurred to me that there is indeed a plausible in-universe way for other characters to earn them. Consider the following:
- after the events of 'Surface Tension' the Federation and Empire agree to cease hostilities and turn their blades towards the true enemy; one result of this is the opening up of the qaD HoS (Arena of Sompek); and
- JHV operators, having chosen an alignment, have the option to play through that faction's specific missions (presented in-universe as holodeck exercises - this also explains some of the DSC missions for non-DSC!Starfleet operators)
With those in mind, it seems plausible to me that (for example) a Starfleet or Starfleet-aligned operator completing 'Surface Tension' or any subsequent mission would then have access to simulations of the KDF-specific missions, presented as holodeck simulations intended to engender a better understanding of their former adversaries/new allies.
An obvious issue would arise when considering those missions specific to half-factions; a possible solution would be to tie such access to reaching T5 (or 6) with their conveniently associated reputations (New Romulus and Gamma Task Force).
