Any advice on how to avoid AFK Penalty in Gamma Quadrant

An afk penalty problem...
I went to the Gamma Quadrant to do the Battlezone.
I actively participated in 2 Planetary Assaults and then flew down to do Sinister Gatherings.
Queued and Did 1st. Queued and did 2nd. Queued and entered 3rd.
This 3rd one was in progress and almost complete (we are talking maybe 30 seconds total here).
I shot an asteroid, gathered, fired twice and it ended. I was given the AFK penalty.
I was then locked out of content for 30 minutes and unable to participate in the Final Hur'q Assault until the last 4 minutes.
This was rather disappointing, as I could have done Swarm to get more carapaces in the same amount of time.
I am guessing there is nothing I could have done to avoid this, but I thought I'd ask in case there was.
Any help is appreciated.

    Shoot at least one enemy and you should avoid it. It's unfortunate you got it, but necessary because people can and do deliberately AFK.

    Ignore the mission objectives and shoot the enemies instead.

    Yeah, it's stupid and useless.
