My bad. I cleared the spam queue last night and basically restored ALL the eaten posts back to the forum. I posted about this in the Edit Monster thread. Again, apologies if it looks like folks are "spamming" threads suddenly. It's not their fault.

I am now Level 10, and on ESD ready to pick a new ship. Which would be best for my TAC Captain?

I have 6 Space Skill Points and 2 Ground Skill Points to spend. Which should I spend them on? And as I spend them, I sometimes get a choice of Skills. Which would be best?

And can someone recommend a free image hosting site so I can post pics here?

I would try a different ship category to see what kind of ship you may like.

To make your mission easier, better focus on survivability.
Space, 2 points Hull Capacity, 1 Hull restoration, 1 shield restoration, 1 Shield Capacity and 1 Energy Weapons Training.
Ground, Kit Performance Expert and Kit Efficiency.

    https://imgur.com/upload
Alternate view: Space, 2 points energy weapons, 1-2 points projectile weapons, 1 point each hull restoration and shield restoration. Back fill 3rd point in energy weapons then 1 point each hull and shield capacity later. Ground: 1 point each weapons and kit performance. From page 3 post #13 Link to proposed build. At this point you can decide to go with a balanced build or not.

There's only so many points available so if you haven't planned ahead you've ended up with a balanced build which is fine if you'd like to try different ships (i.e. science) with potential minor increases in survivability offset by doing less damage.

I've just started and my officer just runs around, and I can only stop him, or turn or attack. Surely I should have to tell him to move forward?

Key for auto move forward is not set.. and none of the options that I could choose from the list made any sense...

Using Windows 10 laptop with built in mouse... which might be a little insufficient?

Default auto-move forward is usually R. Press once to auto-move (or run) forward and again to stop. Press X to aim while moving forward and you'll move slower and do additional ranged damage.

If you're using a laptop such as a Lenovo with a built in red mouse button centre keyboard you'll probably want to invest in a separate plug-in Windows mouse as it'll make moving around so much easier. Take it from a person who started playing with an Apple mouse  (no primary and secondary buttons).

Thanks. I solved this myself by selecting every movement key to be more logical (from my POV). There was no listed auto-move key in the setup. The main issue was really that the mouse moved the camera so I could never select anything. But by changing all the movement keys this issue was resolved.

I have done my first series of space combats, and am considering changing the keys for that as well!

Glad to hear things are working for you. Yes, change the keys to whatever works for you. Most people develop their own personal system over time.

Something you said about the mouse moving the camera and not being able to select anything... Under ground key binds you'll see a "toggle shooter" mode which defaults to the B key.

RPG mode is what I usually use and the direction of my character is controlled via walking or running around with my right mouse button key left pressed down. I also get a wider field of view this way and can control the camera angle in all directions as well as zoom in and out with my mouse scroll wheel.

Shooter mode displays a recticle and your direction is controlled directly by moving your mouse only. It also has a much more restricted field of view. I normally use this just for precise placement when lobbing a grenade, some use it for melee. I think being in this mode may be restricting your ability to interact with things. Head shots don't count in this game

Be familiar with both but really try to stick with RPG (imho).

Will take the opportunity to emphasize the importance of aim (default X) again as it increases your ranged damage by about 30%. Under ESC/Options/Controls you can enable "aim mode as toggle" and disable "use zoom cam with aim mode" to allow quick toggling of aim even while moving to get that damage increase as often as possible. You'll see an extra "ability tag" when in aim mode and if stationary your character will change it's stance.

I have spent my Skill Points thusly:

    Space

    1. 2 Pts in Hull Capacity
    2. 1 Pt in Hull Restoration
    3. 1 Pt in Shield Capacity
    4. 1 Pt in Shield Restoration
    5. 1 Pt in Energy Weapon

    Ground

    1. Kit Performance Expert
    2. Kit Efficiency

Now on to Traits . . . (Oh, my Captain is Human, btw)

    Space

    1. Accurate (+10 Ship Weapon Accuracy)
    2. Beam Training (+5% Beam Weapon Damage)
    3. Bulkhead Technician (+10% Maximum Hull Hit Points)
    4. Crippling Fire (-2.5 Accuracy to Target after Critical Hit)

    Ground

    1. Creative (+30 Kit Performance)
    2. Rifle Training (+5% Rifle Damage)
    3. Soldier (+5% Energy Damage; +10% Critical Severity)
    4. Strike Team Specialist (40% chance of a +2.5 Critical Chance)

What do you think of my choices? Are there better choices? Let me know. :)

I just finished the next Episode 'Desperate Measures'. I am now Level 11, and I put the acquired Skill Point in Projectile Weapon.

On the 'Space Station' part of the episode, I ran a scan, and it told me that there were 2 Anomalies in the Area. I scoured the Station from one end to the other, but I couldn't find either one. Oh, well . . .

Duty Officer missions are now available. I want to get Diplomacy up to Level 4 as soon as possible, right? Any other areas that I should level up?

You should probably put your next point into energy weapons (for a total of 2 points) since those are what you have the most of and are doing the majority of your damage.

Scanning for anomalies and then looking for them during missions may not be the best use of your time. It usually indicates a particle node to be scanned and isn't mission completion related. You'll get plenty of those later.

After you accept a mission go to your mission journal's "in progress tab" and highlight your current mission then use the "make primary button" at the bottom. This puts all the mission's task's to the top of your list and highlights locations in yellow on your map.
Duty Officer missions are now available. I want to get Diplomacy up to Level 4 as soon as possible, right? Any other areas that I should level up?
    Whatever you like.

What do you think of my choices? Are there better choices? Let me know. :)

I think your choices are great for a tactical officer of your level. As you rank up and get more trait slots feel free to experiment, it's part of the learning experience. Techie is another decent space trait to firm you up and could replace crippling fire or even bulkhead technician as you already have 2 pts into hull cap so are good there, but only have 1 pt into hull restoration so could use a bit more there once you're able to slot a hull heal.

As for your skill point selection you've leaned towards an endgame balanced build versus a tactical ultimate build and there's nothing wrong with that. I do the same until my character has a defined role as it allows me to hop from cruiser to carrier to science ship to an escort and do reasonably well in all of them.

A balanced build will also allow you to make decent use of science powers such as gravity well, tykens rift, tractor beam repulsors and others to the extent that they're working quite well. Again, try as many things as possible to learn and for enjoyment.

After you've completed quite a few more missions (and collected about half a dozen more rewards that really help a phaser build) and have reached level 50 or more you can always respec to a more dedicated build.

Looking far ahead to skill tree possibilities (it's always nice to have a plan) you have some choices:
    1. First Steps I list this again as spec that get's you to almost Captain in good style and leaves you open to options.
    2. Balanced 1 An almost purebred balanced build with full points into coordination protocols which help not only hanger pets but also stack to help the rest of your team. A full ground spec is also listed.
    3. Balanced 2 Almost the same build but with things re-arranged to have 2 pts each into shield regen and hardness. This toughens them up noticeably (until you meet your first group of borg spheres in a queue).
    4. Balanced 3 Another variant but now with 2 pts into tactical readiness. In combination with other things, these two points do help with tac cooldowns until you've finished some of your specializations which is why I list it. I currently use this build on a couple of alts. One of them (an engineer about a month old) parsed 54.8K dps so it does work just fine.

Others may have different ideas about a balanced spec. Look at as many ideas as possible and discuss them with others. Since there isn't any requirement to spend all your skill points right away despite the blinking light on the upper left of your screen urging you to do so, you may want to leave out the following: the 2nd point in shield capacity, the 2nd points into shield hardness and regen, the 2nd point into particle gens, all coordination protocols and tac readiness (9 points in total).

Tactical Ultimate With full credit to the spec going to @seaofsorrows I use this tree on several of my mains and it works great (but was couldn't find his bare tac template that just lists the spec without the ship). On a build that incorporates a torpedo you can take the 3rd point off of targeting and defense and put the two pts into projectiles. Also note the small difference in the ground spec. This spec is pure damage and is nicely balanced with a few mission rewards.

Thanks for the shout out, very kind of you.

If anyone is interested in the Tactical Template, you can find it here. As always, it comes with the disclaimer that I don't claim this is 'best' or 'right' just what I personally like. If it helps someone get ideas to build off of then that's great.

I would just like to point out that the linked build for the Arbiter is outdated and no longer used. It's basically just change the weapons to cannons/turrets and drop the Iconian Set for the Competitive/Fleet combo. I can post an updated Arbiter Build if someone wants it.

I know you have not asked, yet, but here is some useful DOFF info for future reference.

There's lots more useful info out there, some in video form but sometimes you end up watching long vids and then don't learn what you were hoping to learn.

Anyway, if I find more DOFF info links, I'll be sure to post it here or make a new thread for it.

    All links are Error 404.

I just finished the Episode 'Shadow Play'. I am now Level 12. That Command ship was a brute! It didn't help that my targeting of said Command Ship kept changing to a different target. I wasn't touching the 'Tab' key, and I wasn't clicking on the screen, but there you go.

I recently came into possession of some Phoenix Prize Pack Tokens (4 Rare and 1 Uncommon). Is there something specific that I should spend them on?

As far as the links go - Google seems determine not to play nice about showing pics any more. :(

With you limited storage, I would not have open them right now. You'll need to get to level 15 before you can use DOFFs and there are a few good ones under the rare option. If you want to wait for your Admiralty stuff to kick in there's also a great card you can get. Other than that, just hang on to them until you decide what you want to with your equipment using....

    https://sto.gamepedia.com/Phoenix_Universal_Tech_Upgrade

If you gather up a bunch of these PUTUs, keep them safe until you level above 50 or maybe even wait until you're all the way to 65. The first thing I'd use them on an SIFs. That's my advice. :)

The messages in the mini-game don't matter, destroyed colleced... whatever. Just ignore them. What matters is to miss as little of the particles as possible and to get a score of 2300 or above, because that gives you the max: 3 traces and 1 sliver, or randomly even better. You can use the R&D System to combine them up into omega partcle upgrades to upgrade your gear witout dili cost.

Edit: Valuable hint - use the mouse for the minigame, not the keyboard.

The good thing is that the Anniversary Event rewards a free Tier 6 ship that scales with your level and that harvesting particles is an optional benefit.

I did the Q's Daily mission for the Omega Particles. One was at Starbase 39-S, one was at Andoria (both really close) while the third was all the way out at Bajor! It took me forever to fly there especially since I don't have clearance to enter that sector of space. After a couple of minutes, I was finally allowed access. After playing the space ones, sometimes a button appears reading 'Talk to Loot Crater' or something like that. What is that?

I currently have 4 Red Strands, 2 Blue Strands, and a Yellow one. I also have 80 9th Anniversary points (or whatever they're called). I apply those to the free ship, right? (You'd think that the game would do that automatically).

I've been claiming the free gifts each day. Each of my Away team has a Triolic Tribble. I also now have a Nukara Tribble and a Solanae Tribble. Should I discard them or sell them on the Exchange?

At your current level (11 ish?) are you able to skip ahead or gain access to the very last two missions that pay out 200 9th Anniversary Prize vouchers each? They fall under the "Mirror of Discovery" chapter and are the episodes "Para Pacem" and "Illusion of Communication". You'd need to do these two to get the ship. I'm having issues accessing those missions on a level 28 character on an alt account is why I ask.

You have to slot the project for the free ship under reputation/events called "Collect 2019 Anniversary Rewards", get the 400 APV's from the two missions, and fill in the rest with the 40 APV/daily mission from Q during the event. Unlike the Christmas ship, this one can't be completed next year. It is an account unlock though.

I've been claiming the free gifts each day. Each of my Away team has a Triolic Tribble. I also now have a Nukara Tribble and a Solanae Tribble. Should I discard them or sell them on the Exchange?
I'd store one of each on extra boffs. If you like the buff you can use one yourself. Some may be character bound so you won't be able to sell them. The Triolic tribbles most likely didn't come from a gift box but rather some Comet Cocktails from Drozana Station you left in your inventory. You know... that usual Tribble and food thing.
After playing the space ones, sometimes a button appears reading 'Talk to Loot Crater' or something like that. What is that?
That would be the "Loot Critter", the in-game placard for the "giver of loot".

Edit: There is a fix en route for characters currently unable to play the 2 missions mentioned above

It's nice they fixed things up quickly so that everybody can now do those two story line missions as part of working towards getting the free ship.
    • The Mirror of Discovery Arc is now available to play for all factions at any level past the tutorial.
    • Romulan and Jem’Hadar captains will need to have chosen a faction as well.
    • 23rd Century captains must be in the 2410 era to play these episodes.

Even though the Anniversary Missions do not make any sense due to them not being in any order with any other mission groupings, they can be played at your current level and offer some pretty good gear for your level until the Anni is over. Like the SIFs offer for completing Illusions.

Once you get to level 20 - Commander, the SIF would be at Level. And, actually, this is true of all the gear from Recently played Mission. They are meant to be repeatable to allow gathering duplicates of needed items, like Phasers Beems for you ship or Plasma-beam rifles for you DOFFs. And then when you level up, if you still can't make VG Gear for yourself, you can repeat a mission for some gear you really want.

My first and Favorite Space Set arrive during my first Anni.
    https://sto.gamepedia.com/Kobali_Regenerative_Circuitry
Or did I mention that already?

There may be on in the offing during or just after this Anni. A new ship usually comes with a Space Set to complement it.

Lucky, you, I believe that you've joined just as the Devs offer up the first ship that seems to level as your Captain levels.

Be extra carefull when doing this as you do not want to level up too fast.

I just finished 'The Vault'. Let me get this straight: I have to go in a Shuttlecraft, but the enemy can have a Heavy Warbird (or whatever it is) in there? Yeah, that's fair. Btw. is there a way to shut off those beams that drain your shields or is that just a cross we have to bear?

I hit Level 20 and I also received my free Vulcan Anniversary ship today. I picked the Heavy Cruiser (Dakota) with my Rank pick.
