What would be a good "generalist" build for me?

spiritbornspiritborn Member Posts: 4,367 Arc User
I'm leveling my AoD toon and I'm wondering what would be good "generalist" build for my AoD toon (human engineer)? aka a build that's decent for most situation but not necesserily great for anything. I'm not looking for build for max DPS, but rather something I can use while leveling without having major issues.

Are you just looking for a skill tree? or a ship build?

    If so, for which ship?

Both is possible and I'm using the T1-4 Walker atm

I typically run torpedos fore and aft, so I use the highest TS I can run. as soon as I have 2 tac slots I run TT1 and the TS, when I can i add BFAW, then BOL and or APB. I try to have 2 shield heals and 2 hull heals, ET2, ST2 HE1 EP2S1 when you get to a high enough escort, I change the BOL for the cannon buffs

For the Walker.. honestly.. just throw whatever you have on it.

For leveling missions, the Walker is crazy overpowered.. just use the best gear you get from missions and drops and you should have no problem. I wouldn't worry about the ship build too much until you start to reach level 50+.

For Skills, it kind of depends on your career choice, this is the template I use for my Tactical Officers. Engineer is pretty similar, I just might move 1 or 2 points around depending on if I want to be a little tougher or more damage focused.

It should be noted, this is just what works for me and is in no way intended to imply that it's right or that any other setup is wrong. Feel free to move some points around if this looks to 'squishy' to you. I get the bulk of my survivability from bridge officer skills, traits, consoles and consumables. The template is complete with traits and away team/equipment setups. This is what I use for Elite Space and ground missions, hope it provides some help.

Sea's skill will work better as long as you are not in a science ship.

Excellent point and I should have mentioned that.

My skill suggestion is purely for energy weapon builds, I don't do 'Sciency stuff.'

I also don't use Torpedoes, so if you use them you will need to re-allocate points for Torps.

Good to see you making build request here Shim. :)

Some folks around here can certainly help you and already did. I consider especially @seaofsorrows to be an expert to well-balanced builds. It’s amazing how he manages to fine tune his crafts to always make a good figure no matter if he ends up with Felisean or in a bad pug situation.

Well there's no shame in asking. I'm not one who is too conserned about being on the top slot of the DPS charts but still it helps if I got a build that doesn't cause me to die constantly on one of the most durable cruiser in game atm ;)

I find it all depends on how one likes to play that will ultimately determine their build...

But generally, I enjoy a rather tankier ship usually (yay cruisers) but been dabbling in science and escorts.

I like to have plenty of healing,1 fast, 1 heal over time, both shield and hull. Emergency power to weapons x 2 so I can keep it running, reverse shield polarity cuz its awesome, and science skills for flavor depending on what you find fun really or what works well for you. EPS is DPS... so take any and all skills to up power levels and power transfer rate.

Ground: fabrications. All the way. I love my shield generator, shield dome, health generator, combat drones... bring all the toys!

Overall, spend time swapping out different BOff abilities and figure out what you enjoy the most and what meshes with your play style. You'll quickly pick up on what works well together (like tachyon beam + high yield torp).

I used to use my own balanced skill tree to rank up toons since I do enjoy "sciency stuff" but tbh aside from a dedicated science orientated character I've recently switched to your build template (adjusted to have 2 points in torpedoes or an extra point in hull regen) as the new gold standard.

If there are any ships that do "sciency" stuff that I need mastery traits from upon reaching level 50 they usual have the console slots available to make up the difference and do quite well enabling them to grab their tier 5 mastery traits and then continue on without any need for a respec to their end-game ships. Never thought I'd be referring to a 27 point tac ult spec as balanced but at this point you have me sold.
