My main character still uses the defiant quad cannon build. I refuse to bow down to cruiser beam faw online game design. With that being said.. the quad cannons used to have one extra mod above other weapons. This kept them somewhat useful? (DHC always out performed it) The entire reason quad cannons were built in the first place was to do more damage than other cannons. I fully intend to change the procs to crtd but still.. with both weapon and power drain plus no real advantage mod wise you are better off hitting delete on the epic XV weapon and never turning back. The items that used to be unique and useful in this game are starting to look like garbage including borg proc weapons. (I don't care if the proc didn't work as intended)

Thank you for letting me know. I took some time away so I didn't see they updated this.
Yikes... I missed that one too. Sounds like I need to update some of my other toons. Some of those ships are now useless unless I want to join the disco party laser light show..

As Napalm said, Cannons are the current ‘top dog’ for overall DPS. While I believe the nerfs on FAW I and II went a little too far, overall there is a really good balance right now. Both Cannons and Beams are viable provided the beam build uses FAW III. Cannons are definitely stronger overall but still not as easy to use as a beam build. Upgrade those Quads and enjoy, they’re awesome.
I used to avoid them for that reason, but it turns out that -10 Engine Power usually makes no difference to me.
Still, it's a good point, if you need the extra engine power then it might be best to avoid Quads.
Most people won't notice any improvement between Quads and standard DHC's. I saw some parses a while back over on the build reddit and the Quads function pretty similar to standard duals or dual heavies, the difference is percentages and you'll only really notice that in parsing.
The big problem with Quads is that they come at Mark XII Very Rare, so often times they're more expensive to push to Epic then just crafting some Mark II's and upgrading from there. I have one character that uses the Quads because I got lucky on the upgrade but usually I will just go the cheaper route and craft a Mark II Dual or Mark II Dual Heavy and upgrade it instead.
As you said, just because they're called 'Quad Cannons' doesn't mean they do 4 times the damage, it's not even close to that. The name can be a bit deceptive.
