Why do we have to have sector space?

First of all, I am by no means calling for the removal of Sector Space. I actually think it is pretty cool as it allows us to see each other's ships while traveling to and from point A to point B...

But with transwarp becoming more and more widespread, especially with the ability to use it to instantly jump to the startpoint of many missions being an actual thing. From my chair, and from a technical standpoint, sector space is not really the big deal it once was. I mean, for those who want to use it, it's fine. But why not also allow players to visit their bridge, talk to their helmsman and plot a course that instantly can take them to where they need to go, wherever that may be?

If there has to be a time sink involved, as if the game isn't already one big time sink. when why not simply allow a distance/time calculation to be applied and have a time based progress bar indicating distance covered? But really, again, with transwarp to mission start locations now a common thing, a time sink to simulate travel time is not needed.

So here's a hypothetical question:

Would you consider it a big deal if there was the option to travel to any point of interest instantly without the need to use sector space?
When it comes to MMOs, I wear prescription glasses. Whether or not they are rose-tinted is beside the point.

    I believe it an immersion thing and since they added more encounters and patrols you can wonder the galaxy and do those instead of sitting in a base or doing story episodes or ques. I like it

    I like it as well. But is it still a necessary component now that there are so many applications of the transwarp mechanic? Could there not also be an option... let me repeat... an OPTION for being able to just go where you want when you want if you don't want do encounters or patrols. Like I said, I don't want to see Sector Space go away. I just feel like that due to the way the game has evolved, it is no longer the mandatory layer that it once was. So why not expand on the options to go where you want when you want without a timesink.

    And if such an option were to be added, there are other potential applications that may in fact expand upon the overall gameplay such as a exploration/colonization/industrialization layer accessible from our ship interiors that doesn't impact the current system of travel at all for those who prefer it.

    Again we are talking about options here.
